I have my first engine with a smoke generator and have some questions. Is it necessary to put in just the amount of liquid that you will burn off? What happens to the liquid that is not burned off?

You can put in more if you will be using it again fairly soon - maybe within a couple of months. The important bit is to not put in too much because that leads to all manner of problems when it overflows and gets all over the place. ThumbDown

In any reasonable amount of time it just sits there, unless you handle the loco and turn it over, in which case it will run out on the outside and make another and different mess. ThumbDown

And you should not power the smoke generator when it is dry, which at least in the past would toast them for sure. BigGrin

I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
So many trains and so little time.

7 or eight drops works well for me. It only takes a few minutes of running to exhaust your supply from my experience
