Hi everyone,

I stumbled upon this website/forum by accident today. Must say it contains a lot of valuable information. Truly a good find Smile

I posted this question on a Dutch forum already but did not get any answers.

Would any of you be able to tell me how I should maintain the Marklin 72270 smoke generator. I trust, since one works with fluids in these things, that one has to clean a smoke generator periodically. How to do this ?

Or should I just keep using it till it does not work anymore and then replace the generator alltogether ? I've read in the manual for the 72270 that one "cannot replace the smoke tube". I trust by this the little tube inside the generator is meant. And not the generator itself ? Surely the generator can be replaced ?

My apologies if my confused's seem somewhat silly. I am new to the Märklin-world...

Kind regards to all,

Rolf (M, 32, Dutch)

Welcome, Rolf.

Yes, can be cleaned. Just extract the small tube inside the center tube with a small pincer, and with a very small needle, of the size of a hair, clean it. My smoke generators comes with this cleaning kit.

And the smoke generator can be changed, of course, from outside, or opening the loco, depending on the generator model.

Ususally there is piece of metal wire that comes with smoke units, it is used to clear a clogged inner tube.. So - yes it is the "little tube" they refer to... Smile

Edit: orubias was quicker...biggrin

I have installed a 72270 in a 37973 steamer 1 1/2 years ago. Never any problems or need for service, and it has been in operation very very often.

Juhan, Orubias, if I remember right there was no replacement filament tube shipped with the 72270. It should be impossible to take this little tube out of the steam generator. Well, I never tried that. Or do I confuse something ?

Removing the tube is, however, possible for the 7226 steam generator (the one used in class 01, 03, 44 and 50 steamers). This steam generator is shipped with a pincer, a replacement tube, and a cleaning wire.

On the Marklin-site I see that the larger generator 7226 does come with such a wire. The smaller 72270 (to fit my 37540 locomotive) does not. To my suprise...

From this comment I gather that the inner tube can be removed. Good news. Allthough I then do not see why it cannot also be replaced. Must be Märklin-logic wink Not to be rude but are you sure the tube can also be removed in this particular model (72270) ? To prevent me from demolishing the generator when yanking at the tube.

Thank you all for the clear answers. I understand the smoke generator a lot better now. Much appreciated Smile

Kind regards,

Rolf

Why do you have to take out the tube before cleaning ? Can't you just use the hair-needle while the tube is still in the generator, and the generator still in the loc ??

Rolf- Welcome to the forum.

Gregor- You want to remove the small tube before cleaning so that all of the gunk you are cleaning from the tube doesn't fall to the bottom of the generator, which would impair the operation..
