Hi. I'm going to digitalize my #3315 BR 50 steam loco with a lokpilot. I wonder if I can keep the original #7226 smoke generator (I'll connect it in F1 exit, right?) or I have to change it because of the different signal outgoing from the decoder, or else if I have to dim somehow the exit...

Someone can help me? Thank you!

Hi, Märklin 7226 (which equals Seuthe 10) is OK when switching a smoke generator digitally with most decoders. So you should not have change the smoke generator.

It is best to connect it to F1 indeed, since F1 is always on with a Delta control, which means your loc will also generate smoke when driven with Delta. If you don't need compatibility with Delta, you can also put it on F2. Some decoders even allow you to assign the function by register programming.

Regards,

Steven

I like to use a small relay for a smoke unit... see the pictures of digitising a 3048 at http://layout.mixmox.com/1/installing_digital_decoder
The technique for a BR 50 will be much the same...

It shows how I also separated the light from the smoke unit so that they can be switched independently

Dale: I used a relay for my BR53 since it has two smoke generators. For a single generator the decoder should be able to handle it. Independent control of the smoke generator is a good thing, though.

I hope so. Also M. digital steamers handle the generator without any relay, so I think I could make the same, if the current it absorbs is not too much!

Bye.

My BR 50 3784 (that came digital) destroyed two decoders through the use of the smoke unit, it depends on the decoder. This was back in 1989 so perhaps the decoders now have better output ratings....
