While perhaps of marginal interest to most people here, yesterday Hornby announced their programme of new releases for the coming year, amounting to more than 360 items. This is a reflection that for Hornby, despite the pandemic, 2019 was a good year. This is perhaps a reflection of the fact that while some people have lost jobs and income, others unable to travel or take holidays have found themselves with spare money available for what I would term hobby hardware, including model railways. Being confined to home is of course an additional incentive. I wonder if this will be reflected by other manufacturers as they announce their new releases over the coming weeks?

Regards Tom --- "In all of the gauges, we particularly emphasize a high level of quality, the best possible fidelity to the prototype, and absolute precision. You will see that in all of our products." (from Märklin New Items Brochure 2015, page 1) ROFLBTCUTS |

Doubt very much Marklin will do anything like this. At most some new paint schemes but nothing completely NEW. But I may be wrong.

Hello Bob, I just did a search on Hornby and it’s a win win situation! Jun 7, 2013 Where are Hornby model trains made? Hornby, the model train manufacturer that also owns Airfix, is to return some manufacturing from China and India to Britain, becoming the latest UK company to repatriate production because of rising wage costs in emerging markets. Now that’s great news and since that was eight years ago how are they on track for producing products in Britain?

Hornby's new Playtrains looks a LOT like Maerklin MyWorld... and apparently cheaper too :O |

A couple of years back, Hornby weren't producing much new stuff so the two biggest British shops and on-line dealers, Rails of Sheffield and Hattons, formerly of Liverpool and now just down the road in Widness, started designing and commissioning production of new models from China.
They were the Class 66 - Hattons, Terriers - Rails, blue open wagon to go with the Rocket set - Rails, and 4 and 6 wheeled Genesis coaches - Hattons. There have been some fallings out with Hornby over this and now Rails don't stock Hornby any more. I imagine Hattons are a bit P'd off with them too as very similar items now appear in the new Hornby catalogue and range 2021. There's fair competition, there's duplicating and there's plagiarism. I would have thought Hornby could have made something else instead of copying RoS and Hattons designs.

There are more features on the Marklin one IIRC from a comparison I did back then. That previous one was more like a battery powered 'normal' HO train on plastic track, as opposed to the new one which is like MyWorld with it's own magnet system, RC controller, fully plastic track etc. |
