A real pity - Hornby can get things so right when they choose to (take the OO scale Gresley coaches for example), but it sounds like this isn't one of their better efforts. On the plus side, their after-sales service (at least in the UK) is apparently superb - I've heard tales of people calling to discuss a problem and being patched through to Simon Kohler (Hornby Marketing Manager and by all accounts a great bloke) as nobody else could help. How many other firms would have just fobbed them off with excuses?

Thanks for the information Steven.

When Miss 8 was starting to show an interest in trains five or so years ago, I was considering Hornby train set (Flying scotsman I think) as I used to have a Triang set when I was her age.. Fortunately, my (then) brother-in-law gave us his old Marklin set. It looks like we made the right choice.

Marklin have off days too. Henschell-Wegmann train anyone? No manufacturer is perfect. Just because one Hornby product has problems it doesn't make the rest of their range junk.

No but Ac is much easier to run and design a Layout. No worries about polarity in reversing loops.

Hornby are now a well run firm and diversify into many other model ranges. I expect if the loco has problems it will be withdrawn.

Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.
