Hi,

Spent a good 20 minutes after hooking up my first m83 only to realise the manic red LED flashing did not mean it was broken.

Is this flashing really necessary? I dare not think how it will alert me if it is actually broken...

Thanks

Good Point!
When a LED are flashing it means started sequence program in other way.
Why Märklin don´t do that is an mysterious...

Sorry?
When you use for exemple Lenz switch decoder and push program button the LED start flashing by start program.
Märklin do other way by show flashing LED as power on.

So that's my point... It's annoying and unecessary. And how it is going to indicate a problem when there's already a manically flashing LED there?

Yes...it should have steady light instead that remain power on.

I struggle to think of many things in the modelling world the "alert you if they are broken"

In the majority of cases something just "doesn't work (as expected)".

As with most problem determination it come down to observation and isolation of what IS working in order to locate the broken link in the chain.

To this end the monitor indicators (as described on page 12 of the manual) on the m83 assist with that problem determination where they can.
Monitor Lights
• If the m83 is connected correctly, a monitor light will blink.
• The second monitor light blinks briefly one time when the decoder is addressed, i.e. when it is switched or programmed.
• If both monitor lights at the connections blink rapidly, then the red and the brown wires were mistakenly swapped.
• The monitor lights at the switching outputs display the current status of the circuit being switched.

I do agree that a minimum amount of effort from Marklin could identify more precisely
- which LED relates to " .. a monitor light .."
and
- "The second monitor light"

But emotive descriptions like "manic red LED flashing" are not very helpful as I have no idea what manic red LED flashing looks like.
If your symptom aligns with one of the states identified in the manual I would ask that that terminology be used.
