Do i always need a m84 to
stop a train or is there a
another way?

As I guess you are digital, you shouldn’t use a M84 (or a K84 or a signal) for abruptly stop your trains by simply cutting power. If you are using a CS3 or CS2 (or any other advanced control unit), my recommendation is that you - use the action features included in the control unit (”good”), or - use a PC software like Rocrail, TrainController or iTrain for controlling your trains (”better”). If you are using a mobile station instead, an alternative would be using a ”brake module” for firmly stopping your trains. You can search for those in this forum. However, if you need and buy several commercial brake modules, this could be more expensive than buying a CS3 or 2nd hand CS2. There are though drawings for self-made brake modules on the net. Just using cs3 The CS3 needs to know "When" , so it needs to have S88s (60881) and one Link 88 (60883) if you have a CS3 (60226) The CS3 does not keep track of where is each loco, so for more than 2 or 3 locos, it needs the help of a train software like Rocrail, etc. Before using Rocrail, I had a CS2 and tried using braking modules and the net result is: - costly (you need one of those for every signal) - heavy wiring (instead of one isolated section per signal you have 3) - difficult to use in bi-directional blocks After using Rocrail: - no more stop sections - no more brake modules - no more signals unless needed for cosmetics - any train can run reverse (loco pushing the train) and still stop at the right place (no need for an additional slider, slider inverter relay, conducting couplers - any train slows down gently and starts smoothly even in hidden stations / in absence of signals I suppose iTrain, TC and others have similar advantages. With a CS3/+ you can record an Event which uses timing to control a train. No other sensors are needed but it takes some effort to get correct. It is easier to use some kind of sensor on the layout, contact track, circuit track, or reed switch to initiate an event through a relay - Link S88 or S88 AC, depending on which CS you have.
