Hi, I'm new to Maxi, I have Marklin HO for many years and just bought a starter Maxi for a garden RR. Are the Marklin track/ transformer / couplers compatible with US big scale , like LGB? Thanks.......

I think Märklin Maxi is true scale 1 normal gauge, while LGB is a larger scale narrow gauge. LGB and Märklin scale 1 tracks have the same gauge but different "code" i.e. rail height. I don't know the details. I knew a web site that described the differences in detail, but unfortunately it has been closed down, so now all I can say is what I remember from it.

I can recommend http://www5a.biglobe.ne.jp/~popi/gauge1/index.htm as a good place to visit for good information. We also own a Maxi set with extra bits including the Marklin bridge.. One day we will build the garden railway... My recollection is that LGB is 22.5:1 (or G) scale.. This site http://www.lgb.de/english/index.htm has more info... They look much bigger than the Maxi... As Per mentioned the track is nearly the same, but the rail heights may be different.. I can't see on the LGB site any information about transformers. In any case it is unlikely that the Marklin Delta (in the Maxi) is compatible with the LGB system and the reverse... |

LGB or incorrectly referred to as "G -scale" is actually II scale (or 2 scale, @ 1:20 to 1:26) and the gauge at 45mm is IIm - which coincidently is the same gauge as I gauge standard with a scale of 1:32.
Marklin track is not at all compatible with LGB track because of the railheight and treadway difference - aslo bear in mind that some Marklin / Maxi 1 cars and engines cannot handle the small Radii of LGB etc. tracks and switches.
I think the gauge on my normal II guage track is 64mm - I have some older Magnus II scale models (standard gauge) - and the size difference between say a 1 scale Omm gondola and the same car in II scale is astounding.
Maxi locos only need their electronics chipped switched, or dip switches reset (depends which Marklin engine you have) to run on the DC LGB system - these replacement chips are included with the Maxi engine.
Couplers are not compatible - but 3rd party companies do make an LGB coupler that is easily installed on all (recent) Marklin 1 gauge. |

For those that don't know him or don't receive his monthly newletter, Robert Frowenfeld has just posted pictures of his new Garden Railway. Click on the link " My New Garden Railway" in the middle of the page. Very nice http://rjftrains.com/
