My little pot of Marklin oil - 7149 it nearly finished. I was a little shocked at the price. Is it really something special or can other hobby oils be used without messing things up?

Faller also sell light oil in a dispenser with a syringe type tip, ideal for oiling locomotives. any light oil such as sewing machine oil will do, but for worm gears and the like the teflon based grease that is sold under the Trix branding should be used, although this Faller item may be suitable also.

In the UK you should be able to find: 'J.D Windle's 'Tried and Trusted' CLOCK OIL' or 'Priory Clock Oil' on Ebay. I use the medium viscosity mineral version on locos etc, also old cameras...and even clocks.
It is clear and quite light.

Alan mentioned this Faller synthetic Teflon oil product... That is what I have used for all model railroad gear lubrication for many years now, both metal & plastic, and I think it's the best thing ever since sliced bread...  I also use it for squeaky door hinges, power tools and even door/car locks that have gone quirky (instead of graphite oil/spray)... In fact, the only lubricant used at home. I'm sure other makers like Labelle have a similar product in the US. But since I live in Europe, Faller is easier to get over here... If it moves, use Faller Teflon oil - If it doesn't move, use WD-40...  |

A mate of mine gave me a litre bottle of fully synthetic 5w-40 engine oil. I think I have enough for many generations.
I converted an old ink jet refill bottle for the purpose.

Hi Rwill
Given that you need to use very very small quantities of oil, I have transferred the small quantity of Märklin oil into a disposable small syringe.
A small Märklin bottle is good for years and a very tiny drop is used at lubrication.
Because of a huge variety of oils, I prefer not to mix them (aka: I use Märklin oil and grease on Märklin stuff).
I don't know if this is the reason but I never a single time had a case of a solid frozen loco because of hardened oil on more than 100 locos some of them being over 70 years old
Faller oil is perfect for plastics as it does not attack the plastic.
I use Rocrail which also keep tracks of operating hours for each loco to signal when a maintenance is due on a loco. This avoids forgetting or over servicing locos.

Never new that Marklin sell oil, I have always used light oil for home use like the '3 in 1' that can be found in B&Q. Never had a problem.
