I'm trying to decide which one of the two new models of the BR 23 that I'm going to buy. It would be nice with sound, but on the other hand I'm not too keen on those silver-painted "rings" around the boiler...

So I've got a question for you guys. How common were these "in real life"? How many BR 23 locos were actually delivered with them, and did they keep them for their whole operating life?

Thanks in advance!

It may have only been one. It might be two, or three. I know of a Roco museum model. It came in a wooden box with a book of the history of Germany's last steam loco. It may be the one in the traffic museum in Nuremburg, or the DB museum in Munich.

Marklin Locomotives with silver rings(or painted) are kinda unusual, and therrfore more collectable than the locomotives that are normal.

So, I personally like them. I would rather have one with rings than without.

Love those Era 1 Tank Locomotives - the more the merrier.

I'm having the same problem, and I had the same with the BR64 (I didn't like the solid rear axle)

If you're interested, take a look at the Primex 3191 as well. The tank profile is different and doesn't taper like the M 3005. It has gold rings as I remember it, not silver.

Sofar I recall all 3005 had a copper ring around it.

If you prefer the bronze age, that's ok with me.

The very knowledgeable "K-P" at Stummis provided me with some info on this. Smile
I don't think he'd mind me sharing that info with you.

According to him, all the BR 23 were delivered with "silver rings" to the DB. Well, he wasn't 100% sure that all were delivered with painted rings, but he was sure that the ones numbering 001 - 077 were.

When these machines then were taken in for maintenance in the mid 50s, they were provided with the new DB-logo and the rings were painted black.
