I just bought some Marklin trains on eBay. I'm going to set up a twice-around loop layout. Which model transformer do you recommend?

I believe they are analog so you can use the old blue transformers but if you get the newer digital loks you would be better off with the white ones.

Yes an old blue transformer would be fine and cheap on ebay. ( Suitably electrically tested). If you plan to run digital locos you need to have a new white controller as the old blue ones tend to fry the digital chip.

Hello DF,
Welcome to the M users forum!

I use the newer white ones with my old analog loks.
Better quality all around, particularly for any future additions to your collection.

If I recall correctly they start power at 4v, so better for slower running than starting power at 8v with the blue ones.
Many previous posts on "trafos" (aka transformers) on this forum if you go to the search feature at top to find them.

The white ones also have a better circuit breaker in them, when you have a short.
No doubt you will be using the M-tracks (metal tracks) with them.
Note the slider on the bottom, as you many well know, is used to collect the "traction" power or positive, from the center studs in the Marklin tracks.

There are also old catalogs for download online that will help you get things up and running.

I've seen the blue jobs on eBay. Do they all have reversing? I understand analog Marklin reverses by a shot of higher voltage .

Both the white and blue uses a higher voltage to reverse, however the old blue is higher then the white and can damage newer digital loks.

These are some of the "blue" transformers I've found on eBay. Is there a rationality to the numbers? Higher is newer maybe? Which has the most output?

Your best bet would be any one of the following:

6153: blue metal, 30VA, 110-115 volt, US plug, UL listed

6627: blue plastic, 30VA, 120 volt, US plug, UL listed

6646: white plastic, 32VA, 120 volt, US plug, UL listed, may be most expensive choice, but newest and only one suitable for analog operation of digital locos.

The smaller ones are usually only 10-16VA, some of the other model numbers are for other voltages and should be avoided, the 280 is cool but has issues with the cord/ wire insulation deteriorating and would need to be inspected for safe operation before use. It, and any other older model you may choose should be stamped 110 or 120 volt to function properly in the US.

Marklin has made many different models with different outputs, cords and voltage specifications, most should run your trains, the ones listed are my favorites...

If you buy newer locos with decoder you have to use transformers marked 120 V.
