Hi,

Just a question before finalizing some tracks (C-track)

If I want a detection of a train presence entering a side track which ends which ends with bumper I would need a contact track just at the entry right?
A "homemade" contact track would do just fine I guess.

Do I still cut the ground at both ends of my "homemade" track and do I need to put the small red insulation "thingys" on both ends?
How about power feed?
I guess that I need an additional one either on the contact track or after it.
The intention is to use S88 for train detection.

Btw, Is it always necessary to use the L88 between the S88 and the CS2?

Thanks for your patience with an happy amateur like myself!

Best regards

Roger

Depending on what you want to achieve, the length of your side track, and the length of the trains you intend to put there. If train speed is slow, it could be better to have only a very short contact track close to the bumber, in order to indicate both ”stop” and ”occupied”.

Hi Roger.

I agree upi depends on what you want to achieve.

For what it is worth I have gone for the option of one at the entrance and one near the bumper because I think is provides more flexibility. You can slow the train to a walk on entry and then the contact track near the bumper will tell the system when to stop the train.

Unfortunately I cannot help with the CS2 question as I have a CS3+

Hi,

The only purpose of the contact track would be an indication on CS2 that a train (mostly short railcars) has entered the side track.
The train(s) would be completely manually manoeuvred from CS2 I.E no automation, starting, stopping or slow down.

I good idea might be to secure a possible future with TC or similar maybe.

But I guess one at the beginning of the track and one near the bumper will do fine then?

Does anyone have a nice "how to do and how to think" manual or knows a web page in regards to contact tracks and train indication?

Best regards

Roger

Hi there,

You will probably find most resources in regards to contract tracks on this website. See e.g.

https://www.marklin-user...locks-and-contact-tracks

https://www.marklin-user...-homemade--Contact-Track

To answer your specific questions:

Yes you need to isolate the rail in both ends, by cutting the taps underneath the C track and install the red isolation plastic. If you have a multi meter suggest you always test the rail is proper isolated. Also some c tracks rails will touch each other so you may have to use a file to ensure there is a gap between the actual rail as well.

The power will still flow through the track through the Center rail and the other ground return rail that hasn’t been isolated. So in theory you don’t need to install a feeder after your contact track on the siding.

In general I would recommend to spend the time and effort upfront installing enough contact tracks to ensure you can have some basic automation. So on a siding I would install one just after the turnout to e.g. slow down the loco and then one just before the bumper to stop the train. On a long siding I would have 3 pieces with one in the middle to e.g. set the loco to crawl speed.

It’s super easy to make C track occupancy sections, so if you are thinking on a further computer software automation just go ahead and plan enough sections BigGrin

Best Regards
Lasse

Hi
Roger you ask many questions and here are some of my answers
Do I still need the ground? In theory no if you cut all your contacts on the same side of the track
Do I still cut the ground at both ends of my "homemade" track and do I need to put the small red insulation "thingys" on both ends? You need to make sure that all C track sections have their bridges cut and you use either the small red insulating shoes or you cut the rail (and remove thoroughly all metal dust) If you also cut the bridge on the buffer then you don't need another cut /insulation shoes.

Where to have the contact tracks? If you drive manually, the contact track will serve little purpose (you do what you want as it is only for signalling purposes
In automatic mode (I use Rocrail), I use 2 sections: one short near the switch and a long one for the entire storage zone.
The result is this when uncoupling

and this for getting back the wagons

Why? because the first short detection allows to detect the loco when it comes back to collect the wagons) and the long one to detect that wagons are stored there.
Note: for passenger cars storage I use the same principle but only the main detection is on 20 cm before the buffer to slow down the consist

Is it always necessary to use the L88 between the S88 and the CS2? No, if you have old modules (6088, 60880) you can connect them by the flat cable directly using the connector under the CS2. There is a constrain: electrical noise limiting the total flat cable length to 2 m and the chain arrangement of M88 modules.
With a link88 you may have 3 buses so 3 directions to distribute your new L88 modules. The last advantage is when converting to a CS3 then the change is painless. In my case I had to change the addresses of the M88 modules to be connected to the BUS 3 of the Link88 but before I had both a Link88 (60883) with 60881 modules and old S88 modules connected with the connector under the CS2.

Note: all the videos above show leaving and picking cars / wagons in totally automatic action.

Cheers
Jean
