Hi! My name is Choong. I am a newbie in this hobby, in a way. I bought my digital starter set in 2003. Ocassionally, I would lay out the tracks and run the trains but did not seriously take this up. Maybe it is because I am also into scale modelling and that took quite a bit of my time. Furthermore, I find this hobby a bit complicating and confusing plus the lack of local support. Hopefully, I can find them here in this forum.

Cheers!

Hello Choong,

hopefully through this forum, you can get to know some of the other modellers in your region. They will have tips and suggestions on how and where to get Maerklin items and parts. As far as technical questions, feel free to ask here. I am sure that some of our members will have the answers you are looking for.

You stated that you also are interested in scale modelling. That should not be something too different than many aspects of our hobby. The only difference is that now, you will be doing it in 1:87 or 1:93 or 1:100 (as the case may be), but don't get me started on that here.

As you started with a digital start set, it likely came with either a mobile station or central station, depending on the set. I am pretty sure that 2003 was already past the 6021 era. This means that from the start, you are pretty well equipped to operate any mfx or fx locomotive. So, any new lok bearing the mfx or fx logo should be ready to run on your layout. Your set likely came with either C or K Track, both of which are still available from the factory.

I look forward to hearing more about your models and how we can be of assistance. Welcome to the forum.

Regards

Mike C

CS1 came out in 2005, the MS1 a bit before that, but certainly not in 2003.

Starter Sets from 2003 came out with Delta controllers, and the German and Swiss Mega Digital Starter Sets had 6021's.

IN SIngapore about 2005/6 the local Marklin Store had many starter sets and all had the 6021. Noting more modern.

However there are a few membersof this forum living in Singapore.
Slight Correction the CS1 was supposed to come out in November 2005 but it was about 8-9 months late.

Hi Choong,
Welcome! I see you are also into scale modelling. Is there still a model shop on Scott's Rd. just North of the Orchard Rd. intersection? I visited in 2004 and really liked it, though the prices were really high.

Yes, this is certainly the place for support. Just ask away and you will get good advice.

Dear All,

Thank you for the warm welcome! I feel at home already.

Well, as I mentioned, I bought my first set in 2003 with a 6021 controller and 6002 transformer. Later, in 2007, I bought another starter set but this one is with the 60652 Mobile station and a 66191 transformer. Both of these sets come with C-track. Currently, I have 4 loks but no permanent layout. I am still trying to find one that I like but no luck yet.

I really want to get into this hobby in a more serious note but I find it hard to do so. It is not like my scale modelling where I can get a lot of references/techniques/help either in print form (magazines) or in the internet. I bought some books on railway modelling but none of them refer to Marklin.

Once again, thanks for the warm welcome.

Cheers!

Hello! Yes, the model shop is still there. Occassionally, I go there to get my modelling stuff. Depending on what models you are looking for, sometimes you can get a bargain there.

Hi and welcome. I know this is pretty basic but have you got a Marklin catalogue. This gives lots of info on track and control etc. Consider a start set giving you the new control units etc.

dave
Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.

welcome to the forum Choong, i'm certain if you have any problem, either big or small, someone will be able to tell you how to fix it, though it will be very unlikely that it will be me as i'm still very much in the learning stage.
My wife, children, and all my friends, think as i'm into Model trains, i'm very boring and should grow up. NEVER NEVER!!!

Hi Choong

The difficulty when you start is that you don't know exactly what you want and what the possibilities in the model railroad are. To give you some ideas I have a link for the Märklin Magazine, see below
http://www.maerklin.de/mm/index.php
It is in German, but look at Downloads and Gleisplan Archiv and you will find many suggestions for a permanent lay out.
Furthermore read as much as you can about modelling and slowly you will see that you get ideas. And remind: most people have rebuilt their first lay out, because they get so many ideas that their first lay out is not satisfying anymore and they change it.

I also read that you have bought 2 starter sets but the 6021 and the MS have a different Motorola (= the digital system) setup. See also the diigtal topic for more information.
And don't hesitate to ask questions.
