Hello,

In addition to HO gauge, I also collect O gauge.

I am stuck between gauges, but I like operating O gauge better and looking at HO gauge better. (But now maybe the other way around? --- I like them equally!)

At first, information on O scale is hard to find. Some books I suggest: (I have in my collection)

Christie's Toy Trains
Marklin During the Time of the Kaiser up to 1908 (All volumes in this series)
Die Weiten Spuren (Claude Jeanmaire) - Good O scale!
Schiffmann Marklin Spur I 1985
Schiffmann Marklin Spur O 1985
Schiffmann Marklin Spur O 1986
Many Christie's auction katalogs as well. (I see you have bought some recently..they are good to have.)

Some good websites for O & I scale found after very hard researching!:

MEA:
http://www.polar.sunynassau.edu/~fanellis/mea.html

Tinplate:
http://www.tinplatefreundebern.ch/index.htm

Bernd Tinplate:
http://www.bhb-null.de/index.php

Good O Scale auctions:
http://www.brockmann-auktionen.de/

Liberty Ship Collection:
http://libertyship.com/german/index.htm

Good Forum:
http://alte-modellbahnen.foren-city.de/

My website: (o scale section)
http://marklinstop.com/

Best Regards,

Good luck with O scale! Post pictures if you have time...

Bill

Some other books,
Märklin Eisenbahnen von den Anfängen bis H0 by Christian Väterlein and Botho G. Wagner
Märklin Chronik 125 Jahre (1859-1984) (IMHO one of the best Märklin books available)
Though they are only available in german and they cover both 1 and 0 gauge + some more..

Add me to the (short) list of Maerklin 0 gauge electric model rr collectors! Just getting started but I have three steamers, one electric, a couple of wagons and a nice 40cm baggage car - so far.

Thankyou for the links.
I have purchased my first Märklin O gauge. It is a clockwork engine, R900, and I am looking to gradually get rolling stock to go with it.
I already have one Hornby clockwork engine from UK, and about 10 pieces of rolling stock. I want some Märklin, for comparison.
I cannot afford a huge collection, but I will be satisfied with a representative selection showing the evolution of model trains for child's play.
regards
Kimball
HO Scale - Märklin (ep II-III and VI, C Track, digital) - 2 rail HO (Queensland Australia, UK, USA) - 3 rail OO (English Hornby Dublo) - old clockwork O gauge - Live Steam 90mm (3.1/2 inch) gauge.

Yes, this is similar to my limited approach to Maerklin 0 gauge tinplate as well. In my case I want to focus only on electric trains and cars from the 1930s.

I asked the forum owner to consider adding a forum just for 0 gauge tinplate, since we have forums for H0, large scale, small scale, etc. It would be great if we had our own discussion forum. Perhaps if more of us request such a forum it would help.

Hi Jim,
Maybe the O gauge modellers/collectors can post under the "Big scale" topic, and the webmaster can change the sub-heading to include O gauge.

I unfortunately think that there aren't enough people collecting O Gauge for there to be a seperate discussion area. Perhaps we should make a thread to show off the demand for such a change.

They are out there but why should they come here, where the emphasis is decidedly on the smaller gauges?

"If you build it they wil come" as the saying goes.

We need a forum for 0 gauge operators/collectors. I personaly know some who would be interested.

I agree...we should start a thread to make our formal request and show all the support.

Where should we do this? Under forum suggestions? Maybe you should make the thread and we can all say that we agree and that it should be done.

Bill, et al,

I started a thread in support of a separate 0 gauge forum in the Marklin-users.net forum in the "site specific stuff" forums section.

Let's encourage our Spur 0 fans to post to that thread.

Hey Guys,
Sorry i have been away for a while just busy with work.
Glad to see there is others that are into the "O" Marklin as well
I will start posting in the new chat room concerning Marklin "O".
Hey Jim Like the Electric. Did anyone reply to Dimitrios Econmedes?
He had a boat load of 3630 trackage he was selling, I got about 100 sections from him! Now i am set as far as "T" rail goes. I am now "speaking" with a fellow over in Merry ol' England that might be able to make points for this trackage at a reasonable cost as the switches when listed cost an arm and a leg! biggrinbiggrin
Best to all! Dave

Hi Jim,

Yes, this track is the O Gauge track and came after an earlier track that was used for O Gauge that was all metal and had the number "3610." The track in question, 3630, was used from the late 30s early 40s until I think the end of O Gauge. For your ME, it would be the correct track...although it is somewhat difficult to find here in the US, many German auctions sell this track, but it is fairly expensive. The switches get even more expensive...I remember a mint in box one selling for almost $400.

Here it is from a 1939/1940 catalog:

Thanks, Bill,

What is the diameter of a complete circle of the Maerklin track? My outer loop is 80" diameter. I opted for Atlas rather than Lionel T-Rail when I was considering what type of track to use to run my 1937 Lionel scale Hudson. I believe that the ME will run on 40" radius (80" diameter) track and even 36" radius track because the fourth driver is designed with plenty of side to side play in it.

You're right the ME fourth driver does have enough slide and it can navigate the curves just the same as my HR and TK.

I'm not sure of the diameter, but the tracks are 35.5 CM long....maybe Dave knows the complete diameter.

The complete diameter is 180 cm and you have to have 16 pieces of track to make circle.

Hey guys,
I will set up a semi-circle of it tonight and measure center rail to center rail.
and let you know I think that the Lionel scale Hudson would run on this track fine
There is Lionel "T" rail that was made for that engine as i recall but it also is expensive.
Dimitrios sold me the cross track as well as some make-up sections that I use for display
I also got a section that goes from the tubular to the 3630. I saw some of the Lionel "T" for sale on eBay it is dull black and requires some fishplates to hold it together.

Hey Guys,
Here are the measurements:
diameter is 72" center rail to center rail
each section (straight) is 13 5/16" with 12 ties
the Marklin Germany is always embossed on the outer radius rail
on the right.
Hope this helps Best Dave

Hey The 1930 Catalog scan that was posted by bigdaddynz over in the Catalog scans
forum shows the 3630 in it (page 51). Does the 3630 go back that far or is the catalog mis-dated?
it is in the June 30th grouping. Hey Jim like your site and i think the Hudson would run fine on the 3630.

Thanks for the measurements, Dave. I'm not a fan of vintage track...whether it be the expensive and clunky Lionel T-Rail, or vintage tinplate track period. Since I love to run my trains, I don't want track problems to get in the way. For my vintage standard gauge trains I use new tinplate three rail track. For 0 gauge I have selected Atlas track, which has a T-rail configuration. When I get back home after vacation, I'll run the ME, HR, E, and the RS electric and take some photos to share.

Thanks also Dave, for visiting Tinplate Times. I hope you enjoyed the article on modern European outline Tinplate trains.

I am happy to publish articles on tinplate. There are no articles on the site focusing on Maerklin tinplate so far. I would welcome articles on Maerklin.

Dave,

I believe the 3630 goes back that far to 1930 because previous to this track and after clockwork was the silver track...I forget the number but I believe it is _ _ 10.

Hey Guys,
I knew that 3630 predated Lionel "T". Alot of the track that i got from Dimitrios is in excellent shape and i have the plates that hold them together and to the wood. I like the new "T" rail as well and i have a small amount. I am a set-up and break-down sort I like to change up
and mess with different gauges. The Marklin "T" just looks cool and retro! I think I might get a few sections of the Lionel "T" just for yuks.Hey Bill was the 10 a "T" rail?
I think the Atlas "T" is a steel as well, nice stuff.

Hey Jim,
Wow Nice set! I have some Ace as well, I have a rake of Teaks with the Wright full brake and a set of the Milk tankers as well as a E-1 4-4-4 604 Southern with 3 suburban coaches with the Cinema coach
all nice I like the Meccano maint/crane wagon. I have some Hornby OO It runs fine on the Marklin track. Your suburban looks something like mine but mine are green. Bob over at the Western Depot is closing out his remaining stock of Ace.

Hey it looks like the Atlas could be adapted to work with the Marklin 3630.
the bottom half of the Atlas is larger so int might be able to file the ends slightly
so that the Marklin fish plates fit over it. Best Dave

Dave, that's interesting about the possible track compatability between Maerklin 3630 and Atlas. Thanks also for the tip on Western Depot closing out ACE. I'll have a look. I have an ACE A3, A4, and a six car "excursion" articulated passenger car set with lighting. You can see these cars on my layout being pulled by the new MTH 0 gauge Chaplon Pacific here:

The overhead station is the ACE Trains canopy. I really like the MTH Chaplon Pacific. They did a great job with it. It is super detailed. BTW, my layout has three levels...with Standard Gauge and early American 2" gauge on the upper two levels and 0 gauge on the subway level. The layout is only 8 ft. x 12 ft. because that's all the room I have in the basement of my Philadelphia center city town house.

It really is a great station.

To my knowledge, Marklin never gave out production numbers on any of their models aside from the E 800 and some other prototype models and of course, printed material. I believe I did, however, see a website that had production numbers for some 1950s locomotives, but I'm not sure. Today, only some come with the production numbers...

Bill
