I am planning on keeping my layout to era II at the latest and wonder what signals are available for that period. Were electrified signals in use that early?

Hello rhfil, Era 2: Time Period Approx. 1920-1945 the period after the formation of large state railways in Europe. Yes, electrified signals were in use. What country are you modelling? Remember most countries had their own type of signals so it's important to know which country you are modelling.

Germany and as early as possible. Preferable era I but with early era II.

That is what I thought. Where can I get an HO scale version of them? Are the Viessmann Bavarian signals the closest I can use?

In my modelling I revert to the thought that 99.99% of people who might look at my layout will never know what is correct. Maerklin sepmaphore signals will look attractive and purposeful on any layout from era I to VI. Searchlight signals (the so called light signals) were in use from the early 1930s. Maerklin makes them too. Kimball |
HO Scale - Märklin (ep II-III and VI, C Track, digital) - 2 rail HO (Queensland Australia, UK, USA) - 3 rail OO (English Hornby Dublo) - old clockwork O gauge - Live Steam 90mm (3.1/2 inch) gauge. |

If your layout is set in Bavaria then I would use the Viessmann Bavarian style signals. Anywhere else use the standard Viessmann semaphore signals (or equivalent).
Depending on your layout control, a lot of signals now come with built in digital decoders, or you can still buy the standard version (and connect those to a digital decoder if you want).
I use the Viessmann semaphore signals and like them. They have slow arm movement which looks good, though they are noisy on activation (they make a loud thunk noise) is the only detractor. |
