Hi everyone, I'm thinking of buying a track cleaning car, to regularly clean my track in hard to reach places like tunnels etc. Some of my locomotives behave jerky on dirty spots when running slow. What kind of track cleaning car do you use and does it work well on c-track ? Winston

If you can get your hands on a 'schienenboy', your well off.
Unfortunately This one doesn't work well on turnouts. |

I use the Lux track cleaning car. I am generally pleased with it. I had a problem on turnouts and on the sharper curves because it had an enormous pickup shoe as originally equipped and would short out. I replaced the shoe with a shorter Marklin one and solved that problem.
I am less satisfied with it in the catenary cleaning mode. You have to get the tension just right or the rotating polisher will flip the car on it's side. |

I'c got the anniversary cleaning car in order. Tests will be done as soon as i get it from my supplier. I will inform!
Actually, i'm using the roco- clean wagon. As long as you dont have to cross turn-outs, it works fine.

I really need some feedback because I sort of believe that the one who creates the tracks knows how to clean them - so the 46010 might be the best way to clean Marklin tracks. |

Hi all,
I have the anniversary track cleaning car and have run some tests. It seems to work very well. The cars seem a little light and I am considering putting some weight in them to give them a little more stability and pressure against the track. However, too much pressure might be trouble on turnouts. I also have used the Centerline track cleaning cars which I discussed in the topic shown in Thanos' posting.

Trix offers item #24050 track cleaning car in 2004 (70 0150 ~wheels). It looks almost identical to the ones offered in the insider club ... same chassis and cleaning pads!

The Trix Track Cleaning car has a pad that is set up to clean the two rails. Is there any requirement to clean the center rail ?? Or does the pickup shoe constitute a self cleaning feature ?? |

Hi Dikken,
Yes, I have. I use two of them in tandem. The first car is "wet" with whatever cleaning agent you use. I use lighter fluid. The second one is dry to pick up the residue from the first. This is the best combination I have tried and I have tried many. The track gets clean. My suggestion is that you do it on a regular basis. If there is a lot of build up, no track cleaning car will get it totally clean. I am using C track.

Hi Jack, thanks for the info. I suppose you have the marklin version. Is the roller specially grooved? How does it passes the turnouts? If it is a flat surface, I suppose it looses all contact with the rails as it is beeing lift up by the centerrail? Do the cleaningpads wearout quickly in the middle (friction with the studs of the centerrail)? I Know , a lot of questions. I dont want it to become another waste of money. greetz, dikken |

Hi Dikken,
Yes I have the Marklin version. It is not groved, but the pads are put on in such a way that they do not loose contact with the rails on turnouts. The pads are a type of cleaning rag that we use here in the US available at any market. Called Handi-Wipes. You must have same or equivalent in Belgium. Quite a bit of it comes with the car, so you don't need to buy very soon. Does not tear or rip over studs. You can wash them and use them again if you wish. It is very simple and uncomplicated, but it works. Take it from a guy who tried everything from Lux to Rocco. This works the best for me. Again, I don't know what track you are using so if you are using K or M I can't comment accurately.
I am leaving for the airport for Germany and the Toy Fair so I won't be able to respond further for about a week.

I have the Herkat <http://www.herkat.de> track cleaning cars and run them in tandem, the rubber disk first, then the wet cleaner. This order removes some of the stuff on the tracks first, meaning the wet cleaner has less work... At least it seems to work better that way. In any case, I've VERY happy with them. Try not to run over the cleaned track until it is dry though. I've seen my strongest engine spin its wheels due to the slipperyness.

Hi, Some time has gone by since I've opened this topic., in the meantime I managed to get hold on an insidere aniversary cleaningcar, luckily for me my local dealer had one for sale ... The cars work well for me, after some cleaning runs on the track thev've picked up al lot of dirt, so no jerky-behaving loco's anymore I can imagine it won't remove greasy stuff because it doesn't use cleaning fluid, but overal I'm very satisfied with the cars. Since this thread started, I have re-evaluated my position. I still use the Lux car...it really polishes the rails, but I have added a CenterLine car to my cleaning consist. Now just to save up for the Lux vacuum car and I'm in good shape.

I have ordered two TRIX 24050 Cleaning Cars with replacement AC wheel sets from my dealer. They look similar to the Insider car. I'll let you know how well they work, if anyone is interested. |

YES, I'm definitely interested... The new Trix cars arrived last weekend - complete with A/C wheels.. As you can see in the picture below, they look a little bit like the Insider cars. The doors over the bins open, just like the Insider cars. They come with heaps of extra cleaning wipes, but like the Insider cars they cannot clean the center rail. I have added 4 lead fishing sinkers to each wagon, as they are lighter than the Insider cars. No problems on M-track or turnouts. The little loco easily pulls both cars up the 4% incline to the mountain.. Recommended.. While I do agree that they are no substitute for the centerline cars for dirty tracks, these cars keep clean tracks clean. Edited by moderator 10 January 2011 20:28:39(UTC)

In the other side of the world, but I'm using a similar solution to you: a 37654 plus the insider version I got on ebay....

I recently received my MArklin 10-year-membership trackcleaning cars. Not satisfied at all with them. The de-rail on turnouts and they continuously loose their cleaningpads. A Wast of money. Maybe, When I try to raise their weight it will be more succesfull?

Last week I got a set of the Noch cleaning pads that hook on to the wheels of any 2-axle wagon. I saturated a pad with Goo-Gone and ran it around my C-track layout a couple of times. Worked great! Inexpensive, too. You get five units on the card for Noch. I don't have the Noch number here at the moment but these things work pretty good. |

Hi Ron I also got the Noch pads, but haven't tried them yet. What kind of fluid shall I use? What is Goo-gone? Can you tell me of something that I can easily find? Thanks, Nuno

Hi, Nuno. "Goo Gone" is a cleaning solvent that dissolves grease and picks up dirt. I don't know if it is available there. Here is their web site: http://www.googone.com/products_gg.shtmlIt is a citrus based tar and gum dissolver..I'm sure you have an equivalent product available if this brand is not. Check in the household cleaning section of your store. I sometimes use lighter fluid for track cleaning, also. I don't know how that would work with the Noch pads since they are on a plastic base, but it works well with my Centerline car. I put the GooGone on the pad and ran it once around my new C-track and the pad turned black with the stuff it picked up. Really amazing that there was that much dirt on new track. I have spent a good deal of money trying to find a solution to dirty track in my hidden areas (Lux, Centerline), but this is a good and really inexpensive solution. |

Ron, Where did you purchase them from. I have a posting in the HO forum called "NOCH Cleaning Car" But the part number is not in there. I have been having trouble finding these.

Tamrac: Got them from the Lok Shop. I believe the Noch number is 60157. I am not at home this weekend. I will check my invoice Sunday when I get there, but I'm pretty sure it's 60157. ETS also carries them. http://www.modelleisenbahn.com |

The only track cleaning car I have seen in the UK was one by roco. It had a heavy abrasive pad underneath which caused the car to be derailed too often on points (turnouts) to make it useful. The liquid cleaners sound a bettrer bet, anyone know of soumthing available in the UK. regards
