Joined: 03/03/2022(UTC) Posts: 14 Location: Parry Sound, Ont. Canada		Hi. I recently acquired a 052-1911 model 34171 which was upgraded from delta at some point in it's life to a DCC decoder. I have it running with my CS2 but have no idea of make or model of decoder, or if and what other functions are available. Can anyone identify it for me please.

Joined: 16/02/2004(UTC) Posts: 15,432 Location: DE-NW		Looks like an ESU V4 decoder. Blue decoder PCB is typical for ESU decoders. Reading CV 8 should give 151 for ESU.

The decoder is a blue 21 pin with a white round serial number sticker. An early MFX model, with a whistle and one station announcement. I'm curious as to weather an ESU upgrade sound decoder or a Marklin 21 pin msd3 with electric Loco. sounds would be appropriate. I don't have a decoder tool, and I don't know if ESU sells decoders with pre loaded sound files except with models.

They used to with the old V3 / 3.5 but I believe now the process is to ask the dealer to pre-load the desired sound project from the ESU collection. You then adjust as required with CV values.

I'll get it on the program track tomorrow evening. So, if I check CV8 and it shows 151, that confirms ESU? Will I also be able to find a model number there? Or, what should I be looking for to determine what model it is? Thanks

Märklin ignore the NEM specifications and the NMRA specifications, instead they adhere to the Märklin/Trix specification of 21mtc. From 2006 until 2011 they used ESU decoders that were NEM compatible. In 2008 they introduced homebrew mfx decoders that came in both flavours as needed. MSD/3 and MLD/3 can be configured to be NEM compatible, NMRA compatible, or neither.

Would I need a decoder tool to configure a new msd-3 decoder which I want to replace for the original ESU decoder in a soft drive 39120 E-10? Can my dealer do it? I don't know which Loco sounds are on the 69877 factory decoder, and I know a dealer can load a different sound file.

The 2nd screen shot is after I press "CV Access". I'm sure I've pushed ever button. I can't find any place to add 7 or 8. Thanks for any input you may have.

Canada		Ok, this time I scrolled after tapping that symbol and found some 0 cvs. entered an 8, tried to download from loco, got an error message that transfer was not successful. I'm not sure if that's correct procedure. I can't find any documentation. Thought you might be interested in the following pics. Abandoned Northlanders. Last August I came upon them in North Bay Ontario.
