Hey!
If I have a look and is in doubt which decoder is installed. My M layout is controlled via MS. The actual loco might be equipped with some kind of pure DCC decoder. If that´s the case, will I blow something or will I just find that it isn´t working?

Thanks in advance

I have a few DCC decoders on my layout and they work fine, but I use an eCOS.. Unfortunately a MS cannot control a pure (is there really such a thing) decoder, but I believe that the ESU lokpilot DCC decoders also have a motorola address. The problem that you have is that you need to put the loco on to the programming track of an eCOS or use a lokProgrammer to identify if motorola is supported and what address has been set...

Hi, Steen!
ESU LokPilot DCC decoders understand DCC only. AFAIK you won't harm that loco if you put it on a MM digital layout.
But the reversing voltage of a conventional M* transformer will kill the ESU DCC decoder.

ESU LokPilot decoders understand MM and DCC and can be used conventionally, too.

Other companies also provide DCC only decoders (AFAIK Kühn, Tams, probably more).

In the worst case the DCC only loco will run full speed on a MM digital layout.
I have a MM only loco that runs full speed with DCC only on the track.

Do you know the address of the loco?
You must know decoder manufacturer and article number if you want to set a new address (for some decoders you even have to know the old address in order to set a new address).

If the decoder has a plug you can easily replace by one that supports MM.

Can you post a picture of the decoder?
Regards
Tom

Yes,
you won't blow anything; DCC and other digital protocols are electrically wery similar. A DCC loco will just stand still if it doesn't achieve a DCC signal; DC might move it if set to analog, but hardly Märklin centrals.

Ok - thank You every body.

I am not sure of the origin of the decoder, but it might be a Roco pure DCC.... Or maybe a lokpilot DCC or maybe (if I am lucky) a lokpilot multiprot.

Regarding the adress - there are only 80 to try;-)

Sorry, bad news: with MM protocol there are 255 addresses - but only 80 you can try with your MS.

Roco switched to multiprot a few years ago.

A DCC controller will be able to read the manufacturer ID and version from the decoder (if it supports DCC). Just in case you know a DCC user nearby ...

Trying 80 addresses on a CU 6021 is much faster than doing the same with a MS (but that's OT here).
Intellibox and CS1 can search the address automatically. Just in case you know an IB or CS1 user nearby ... (IB supports DCC)

Good luck - and try 3 at first, then 24, 60, 72, 78 ...

Thanks! If Roco switsched to Multi a few years ago - I might be lucky! However, I think I know some friendly IB-users nearby.
