I am trying to replace the tires on 3021 diesel (and others) with a liquid plastic called "Bullfrog snot". It has good recommendations, but that is beside the point. Directions say to turn the loco upside down so the wheels are up; attach power leads and turn the wheels slowly while applying the plastic. The problem is the engine won't run upside down. Right side up, the engine runs, but turn it over and it won't run. What is the problem? I'm hoping I won't have the same problem with my other engines.

What is this business with "BULL FROG SNOT" That stuff is good for tacking down scenery and other stuff, but for LOK'S, I would stay away unless you have some super special need.

I 'm sure the engines owners manual gives some instructions, and for technique, there are literally hundreds of members on this forum to lead the way.

The diesels and electrics are pretty straight forward, but the steam, etc you have to be careful with the "quartering of the drive gear.

I will get out now, as I haven't changed the tires in many years, I have others to take care of those operations, and let the legion of Marklin users give you the proper techniques and instructions. Please be patient with your priceless loks.
good luck and regards, gene

Just forget about the "Bull Frog Snot" (BFS), Ronald ! It is too much hassle to put it on and to take it off. The Märklin 3021 is such a fine locomotive and I would simply go with the recommended rubber traction tyres and leave it at that. The tyres are easily available.

Cheers,
Ranjit

To apply rubber tyres to this loco take off the bottom plate by unscrewing it, remove the bottom plate, take a flat small screwdriver and go behind the rubber tyre and remove it, to refit rubber tyres hold the tyre with one finger while using the flat screwdriver with your other hand and follow the rim until the tyre sits in the groove., you may go around a couple of times to make sure the tyre is sitting evenly.
regarding the loco not working upside down make sure your contacts are effective., I personally wouldn't run the loco while trying to fit rubber tyres, there is no need for it and its just extra work.

The Bullfrog product can help if you have poor traction, especially on locomotives without traction tyres.

I use it and it works! If ou don't have a Kadee Loco wheel wire bristle electric cleaner that makes the motor run upside down, I jjst use a toothpick and apply it thinly to the exposed portion of the wheels. Usually they have enough gear play to move a bit. Then I either turn the wheels and gears by hand, or let it dry, then see if it runs ok. If it needs more on the bald part of the wheels, I add more there. A little extra in a spot or so doesn't hurt ir affect the running. The noise sounds like rail joints, and as it wears down, get quieter. It will wear down.
