I've got an old Marklin engine that I think is from around the 1930's. Is there a site or a book that can help me identify the age? thanks in advance.

Thanks- I couldn't find one on that Italian website that was exact. The closest was the R800 as it is the only one with four wheels which is what this engine has. The biggest differences are in the color- mine is all black with a very small touch of green. IT is stamped witthe Marklin logo and what looks like the word "wurttenberg" on the bottom if that helps. I will have to dig up a digital cam to send a pic. I can't find any numbers on it anywhere...

Interesting...
Black and a touch of green--with the wheel arrangement of the R 800. Marklin logo and "wurttemberg".
That is all we know for now, but it is definitely Marklin!
Is it a steam locomotive and does it have a tender?? Also, look under the cab windows for a number (it could be worn away though).
Good luck with the camera.
Thanks, Bill |

Yes it is a steam engine, has a tender and 4 wheels. On the side of the cab, under the window is a small tag that is attached on both sides that has the Markling logo and the words "continuous and alternating current" if thats a clue. No numbers visible.

I have never seen this "tag" before...
Maybe others will know about this...I better stop guessing until the pictures.
Thanks, Bill |

Some one on this site told me that for a while after WWI marklin, for PR I suppose, stamped the city name were it was made on the bottom instead of made in Germany. |

Hello, Mike! Have you checked the gauge? Your loco should be in Koll's catalogue if it's gauge 00 (16.5 mm), but it may also be gauge 0, 1, 2 or even 3. |

A guy in the local model train shop said he thought it was an O gauge. Is there a measurement to tell the difference?

The length of the axle between the wheels should be about 14 mm for gauge 00 and about 30 mm for gauge 0. 1 inch is 25.6 mm. If it's really gauge 0 then I can't help you any further. Koll's book cover gauge 00 only - and all 800 locos are gauge 00, too. So the search starts again ... |

thanks. the 3-rail track is about 3.5 cm from outside track to outside edge. Does that make it an O gauge? thanks for your help.
