I have a 3-pole motor and i want to upgrade it,i have never before a serious experience with changing decoders and 5-pole motors. Can i upgrade the loco only by myself with the 5-pole kit? Or it is complicated,so is better my dealer to do it. I am willing to learn. |

Nikos: It is not hard, but you will need to do some soldering. If you have some soldering skills you should be ok. The mechanical part of the installation is easy if it is one of the loks on the approved conversion list. If not, it may need some modification to the lok, the field magnet or the motorshield, in which case I wouldn't recommend trying it yourself for a first installation. |

The loco that i want to upgrade is the one at the 29815 set with the rotary crane. |

I don't know that lok, but I beleive it is a DCM (drum commutator motor) so should be rather straightforward to do. |

I have recently upgraded my loco from the same set with the 60760 kit and the decoder and motor was not any problem but I assembled it again it was to tight so I had to make some more space with a dremel. I got some soldering skills and it took me about one hour to remove the old parts, clean it and fit the new parts. However it took between one and two hours to mill out more space in the body of the loco.
Anyway I can recommend the 60760 kit, much easier than a analog to delta conversion I did about a year ago. Made two conversions with the kit and its cheap to. |

Hello Nikos,
As you have the CS I would recomend the kit 60921 with 5-pol motor and Mfx decoder.

But it would be nice to put a LS mfx, more if there is one specific for the loco, in that case it will be better to buy the kit as spare parts. |

ESU #62425. In addition to the DCM (drum commutator motor) parts, You'll also need a NEM pocket cable.

When you change the rotor from 3 to 5 poles, do you need to change the field inductors? (That is, re-wrap that thin copper wire?)[xx(] Bye

Nop, you use a permanent magnet, you transform the motor into a DC one. |

Hi Mikael,
Very nice pictures[:p]. What kind of soldering iron do you use? I've digitized my old BR44 and must say that the mechanical part of the conversion wasn't difficult. Soldering, although succesful, was a different story.
Any advise will be appreciated.
Kind regards Guus |

I use an old Ersa 24V 60W soldering iron. Nothing special, but way better than a standard cheap iron, that plugs directly into the wall. BTW, I've updated the gallery with some more pictures, as I have finished the installation of my homemade head- and taillights. And what a task. I'm not going to do that again anytime soon. But I am very pleased with the final result.
