Hi guys,
I was talking with a very good friend of mine today and he mentioned to me that in the mid seventies, he received a bunch of model railroad stuff, including tracks, tin plate passenger coaches and a steam locomotive. At the time he was about 9 or 10 years old. In time, he moved from England to Canada and he doesn't know what happened with his model train. But he remembers that the locomotive was called The Flying Scotsman and that it is was HO. Oh, one more thing, he says it was black. He mentioned also that he used to put some kind of pill inside the chimney of the loco to make smoke. I promised him I would ask the more knowledgeable members of the forum about the old Scotsman. So here we are. If any of you knows about this I would much appreciate the information.

Hi Sebastian,

The information given is a little sketchy to be able to determine make, model, and date of manufacture.

The real (and any model of) Flying Scotsman was always green. This was the case throughout its life. It was built in 1926, and still runs today. It was a 4-6-2 type (or 231 in Europe), and introduced by the London And North Eastern Railway.

Of course your friend may have had another train set with black engine, from a manufacturer who also made the Flying Scotsman. The tin plate carriages would tend to make it a Hornby Dublo or Trix model pre-1960, but in that era neither manufacturer made a Flying Scotsman.

regards
Kimball

I might be able to shed a little light on this .................The Flying Scotsman was originally only a name plate applied to a train which would transverse the route from London to Scotland. The train as in the service existed before the locomotive and was pulled by many different types of loco. Therefore , it is possible that this model was a locomotive bearing the route plate " The Flying Scotsman"

There are other ideas Wren made HO locomotives and were notorious for producing locomotives in fictitious livery maybe this is the answer.

During its life 4472 ( Which is its LNER number) was taken into general stock by British rail and repainted in Dark Green livery .

Last possible idea..............BR did experiment with different liveries. I have no evidence that "The Flying Scotsman" was repainted even for a short time but maybe its was painted in black livery for a short time...............this seems odd because balck was usually only used for freight locos

The latest hornby model is even more detailed than Alberto's.

It is modelled as running in 2004

I do not know if this helps but Lilliput made a very fine model of the Scotsman in the 60's.If I recall it may also have been HO but it was way ahead of the UK models on the market at the time, that has now changed to an amazing degree.

Also there was a Trix model of the Scotsman also well made and mechanically superior to Hornbyand really quite a solid bit of engineering.

Interesting stuff from Chris and Ralph,

The Flying Scotsman train (as opposed to locomotive) was named prior to 1895, to represent the then joint running of a London to Edinburgh express via three railway companies. From 1923 it was in the hands of one company (LNER), and from 1948, in the hands of British Railways.

This train was hauled by different locos, including the loco named the Flying Scotsman, pictures shown in above posts. Most of these locomotives from 1923, would have been green, (some in blue for limited periods), and many were painted black during WWII.

The streamlined A4 class of loco often used on this train, varied in colour depending on era, from blue, silver/grey, black, and green.

I know that the Flying Scotsman loco, while it was BR 60103, was painted a very dark green, BR locomotive green, from the early 1950s until it was retired in 1963. It's not black but definitely dark, so it could be mistaken for black. I believe that the original Hornby model from the early 1970s was painted this way, before it came out as a LNER model. From what I have read they were not popular and are rare now. Maybe it's that one?

I didn't know anyone else other than Lionel used smoke pellets, you learn something new every day....
