I have bought several ESU locomotives for my Marklin layout. Some of them although diesels have an inbuilt ESU smoke generator (real diesels do produce smoke at times Laugh ).
ESU have a special smoke fluid 51990 which they claim is better that all the others.

The description of this product claims that it is better than any others, because it does not leave any residue but supposedly the others do.

However it is impossible to get this product in Australia because freighters refuse to carry it by air, and nobody seems willing to send deliveries by sea.

So ..... will I do any harm to my ESU locos that have factory installed smoke generators if I use the usual brands of smoke fluid that are available here ? Seuthe for example.

Norm.

Yes, maybe.
Those new fandangled smoke units have a fan inside. Ordinary smoke fluid might result in higher noise levels and even early death of those fans.
Note that Märklin offers two smoke fluids, one for "dynamic smoke" beside the regular Seuthe fluid.

I don't know if ESU and Märklin light fluids are interchangeable.

Tom

well Tom thank you for that interesting reply.

Although I have received the Marklin 844 steam loco, which has the dynamic smoke facility, I have not even had time to take it out of its box, let alone read the manual, and I had no idea that a different smoke fluid was needed. So your comment that maybe the ESU locos also need a different smoke fluid to the normal Seuthe stuff does make sense.

regards
Norm.

Viessmann 6850 seems to be more or less identical to ESU's smoke fluid. Don't know if it's available "down under"?

All the above-mentioned smoke fluids are “available” in the antipodes from the major internet dealers.

The snag is that the freighting companies will not ship by air flammable liquids in larger volume (e.g. I would have liked to get smokefluid in 200ml units). However if you buy in 50ml units (e.g. Seuthe) they will ship by air. Unfortunately neither the ESU nor Veismann fluids seem to come in 50ml size, nor the Märklin dynamic smoke fluid 02421.

PJ

Hi
The Märklin manuals list 02421 for all their dynamic smoke generators. It's a bit thinner than the regular 02420/Seuthe.
I tried the ESU in some of my Marklin generators and it worked fine, but the smell was a bit worse than the regular Märklin/Seuthe.

but comparing their datasheets, the Esu and 02421 are slightly different.

Really???

I've just received 2 large bottles of the Marklin 02421 smoke fluid for 1 Gauge trains (in 2 separate parcels mind you) and I've previously received 2 bottles of the ESU fluid as well as several 1 litre bottles of the KM1 smoke fluid (used for KM1 1 Gauge locos with dynamic smoke). In all cases the bottles were shipped by DHL. Whether DHL knew what they were shipping, I don't know but it came all the same.

You're using the wrong dealer / shipping company.

Lokshop will happily supply the ESU fluid.

Or the KM1 fluid for that matter....

I've never seen it!

The Marklin 02421 fluid is made by Seuthe and if you follow the link BPH gave, you can download the Marklin manual for the fluid which has more than a dozen pages in both German and English on the composition of the fluid and the handling precautions.

Hi David,

re your recent post and mine at #5:

I kid you not, Lippe were quite happy in the past to provide the larger (I think it was 200ml) bottle of Seuthe smoke fluid, but when it came to dispatch,
DHL refused to carry it and it had to be removed from the parcel.

Recently Lippe changed from DHL to FedEx (for freight to Australia at least). My current shipment took half the time of DHL, actually did go from
Singapore to Sydney by air, not ship and they carried the Seuthe (albeit 50ml because of my past experiences) ; the parcel for less charge.
It will be interesting for me to try again for a much larger volume next time now the contract carrier has changed.

Regards,

Philip

Seems that DHL are being inconsistent or maybe it is country based issues that is stopping them - Aussie don't want it but NZ is OK about it. I don't really know.

What I do know is that Lokshop have recently sent me 2 x 250ml bottles of 02421 smoke fluids in two separate parcels, one of those parcels also including 4 x 50ml bottles of 02421 fluid for our club - all shipped without fuss by DHL.

A couple of years ago I had 2 x 1 litre bottles of the KM1 fluid shipped in the one parcel by KM1 to me all via DHL with no fuss.

I have noticed that the DHL delivery times have come down since the NZ border re-opened. A one month delivery time previously was the best you could expect, most were between 2 and 3 months. The last two Lokshop parcels have arrived in 3 weeks each, much closer to the normal 2 week delivery time, although I am still paying Premium shipping rates.
