Years ago, I was often told I could use any smoke fluid with my Marklin Steam locomotives. I have found out, the hard way, this is not necessarily so. I bought a bottle of Bachman smoke fluid. Over time, (years) its consistency has thickened. I have had to clean it out, using Seuthe and Marklin smoke fluids, and run the engines until the Bachman had diluted enough to smoke itself away. Moral of the story, stick with the better quality made for Marklin.
I think I will run any locomotives with smoke fluid until they run dry, rather than leave any residue in the smoke generator as an additional precaution.

I have always tried to run my smoke units dry to leave no residue and I have had good results with both the 7226 and 72270 units with Märklin fluid.
If you like using smoke units then I recommend the 1 gauge fluid (bigger bottle).

Just a note here, you can't run the smoke unit dry in the new locomotives with the "Dynamic Smoke". You will burn up the element inside and possibly the circuit board that controls it!

The Marklin digital guy's reccomend karosene too. Also to clean tracks.

Kerosene for lighting smokes nicely and does not damage the varnish, it also cleans the track well and is cheap. I add a little perfume or a little lemon juice to it (not too much because it's an acid)

Yes, I also heard from a Hobby store dealer a few years ago that Kerosene would work just as well as the smoke fluids sold by Marklin or Trix. I have not used the Marklin fluid since! Great Advice from that gentleman dealer, but you would think he would have a vested interest to keep this info quiet from the consumer. LOL!
