Good day Everybody

I have to replace all my loco's that were stolen.
I have not used any of them in 10 years when last myself and my Dad played with them.

I any case I digress.
Insurance paid out a lot of money for new ones.
I had a central station first one and a reasonable amount of tracks.
So I would like to know just to get me started again if I get a CS3 Plus and the following sets will this be sufficient to get myself and my 10 year old son back into playing trains and models or do I need other equipment.
29467
37793
29074
29060
These items were similar to the ones stolen so that is what it was based on if you guys have any suggestion please
I am listening.

Johan

Hi
@ Johan My taste is a CS3 (60226) optionally associated with a Link88 60883 and its power supply 66360 or a 60201 (if you want feed back info for signalling or automatic operation. It needs also a power supply adapted to your country 60041 (in Europe for smaller layouts). I use a 60101 to power my 32 locos layout (no boosters but a clean and strong wiring).
This solution is cheaper (than a CS3+) and offers more possibilities (multiple buses for sensors and their decoders 60881) with one restriction: the CS3 60226 must be the master. Please agree with me it is not a huge constrain as all additional CS3s you might want must be 60216 (CS3+)

Regarding the selection of trains and locos it is a matter of taste of your kids and memories you have with specific models.

IMO, newer locos are more detailed with better decoders. The only limit is that in 2000 2010, Märklin produced SDS (Soft Drive Sinus) motors that were way better than what the CAN motors they use today. SDS Locos were also fragile and upper end (not kid's locos) and are non-repairable now.
Cheers
Jean

I maybe missing the point (I usually do) but are you suggesting you buy:

Three fairly basic start sets so you will end up with three 1st radius ovals, three MS2’s, power supplies and track boxes and some fairly basic loks etc.

A very nice TGV set – not yet out

And a CS3plus and power supply.

You will have to spend a fair bit more to justify what you have bought you haven’t yet got a turnout, a signal or anything else.

My simple suggestion is to buy the CS3 book that has just come out and see a few ideas in there and start planning.

Buying three start kits is overkill. The locomotives are pretty basic (there has even been reported problems with the loco in pack 29074), they only have lights but no sound (of course locomotives with sound will be more expensive).

I would have to admit that buying either version of the cs3 doesn't make sense when purchasing those start sets and ending up with all those ms2s.

I would suggest that buying the diesel and steam start sets, and then looking at other individual locos and rolling stock to the value of the third start set and the cs3 would be a better proposition.

I would suggest selecting from the following items; -
36244 Steam loco
37861 diesel shunter with telex couplings.
39978 railbus and trailer (note this will be about half the cost of a cs3)

4313, 4314 and 4315 to go with the 36244, or alternatively 43146 set if you can find one.
4415, 44203, 44215 and/or 44217 refrigerator wagons
46404 flat cars loaded with motor cars if you have children and looking for some play value.

It would be worth getting a full catalogue and browsing through the possibilities if you haven't already.

Thank you for all the replies so far I need some time to process the information given and I still need to do some work as well...
My Budget is 2400eur so I have a fair amount of money and I already have a fair amount of tracks.
so I think by combining all that has been mentioned I will be able to keep myself busy for a while.

I think you need to set a final goal. What do you hope to accomplish with your layout? I started with a starter set because I needed to be familiar with model railroading not having been in the hobby for over 60 years. But once I had played with that I went with a CS3+ because I wanted my trains to run around a layout without divine intervention - someone going around ahead of the train throwing switches and uncoupling so I wanted digital switches, uncoupler tracks, circuit tracks, a M84, and some S88. I also have always loved computers and wanted to play with full automation. Would you and your son be interested in learning coding and logic? The CS3 family can familiarize you with logic operators. Are you into modeling? I am not but great opportunities there. I think you should stay away from starter sets as they are entry level and you seem to be well beyond that.

rfil, you are further advanced than even I. My advice is set a modest goal at first. Don't try doing more than he can handle. Even automated routes need intervention.
I'm frustrated after installing my remaining bridge ramps. Tomorrow is another day. I have to mark where piers go next, screw them down, then make track adjustments on them before screwing the tracks down. A helping hand would be nice. It's just me though. I see where being in a club is beneficial. Everyone has a skill they excel in.

Hi Johan,

If I had a budget as you mentioned and had to to start all over and build something I could enjoy to play with my young daughter, I would:

Buy a brand new CS3 (don’t really need the plus functionality). Buy through a store where you can return it for any warranty repair.

Find a good price on eBay for a starter set with MS2 to have that extra controller.

Shop around for new locos on sale. Buy some that are a couple of years old. Maybe get your son to choose some he would prefer?

Buy second hand passenger carriage and freight wagons on eBay.

If you are building a temporary layout I would opt for in build turnout decoders. If you are building a more permanent layout do some more research and design and decide now if you are planning for automation etc.

Good luck and sorry to hear that you lost your previous collection.

Best Regards
Lasse
Digital 11m2 layout / C (M&K) tracks / Era IV / CS3 60226 / Train Controller Gold 9 with 4D sound. Mainly Danish and German Locomotives.
