I have a SBB Re 482 Alpäzähmer and it came with a sound decoder, I've decided to change the Märklin to an ESU sound decoder and I wonder sometimes is it really worth with this particular loco to change the sound decoder for more sound slots, e.g. driver conversations/messages, door closing, board computer message and a few other sounds, is it really necessary ?
I would rather see the that the air horns sound like the prototype and have an extended mixed sound horn and the loudspeaker has the quality to reproduce these sounds.
I'm thinking of putting the Märklin one back

Hi John,
Well I do not own any Swiss electrics, so I have to imagine the sounds of which you are talking.
Anyway, I am not at all technical so I would never replace a Marklin installed decoder with another.
It would make no sense to me.
I have installed Marklin steam sound decoders in US model locos (I think they are one of the best decoders I have used) even though the whistles don't sound American.
But it does it for me.

John-the current Marklin sound decoders for the 185/482's are not too bad. I have the several 185/482's that I upgraded with Loksound 4.0's and warm white Led's, but also have the 36619 and 36627 and have no intention of replacing the decoders. Honestly, how often do you use 20+ functions? |

Honestly, how often do you use 20+ functions? this was my point in fact 28 functions, ESU website shows now 2 traxx sound decoders (Traxx 1 & Traxx 2) and the video above came from Traxx 2 sound decoder. my other BR 185 (SBB Re 482) have the traxx 1 sound decoder and there is quite a difference in the startup but as you said the Märklin sound decoder for these locos aren't to bad either. I'm getting my other 2 SBB Re 482 ready for track operation and have altered them e.g. lights: 3 headlights, 2 high beam, 2 marker lights, 2 cab lights, 3 headlights with ditch light type 1 when people take photos or videos of this loco, as an acknowledgement and usually they blow the horn as well as seen on SBB/BLS videos., the locos don't have power from the pantographs so I've added a contact to it as well. and last I've increased the rubber tyres by 2 so all up it has now 4 rubber tyres and the loco has 4 driven axles., a change to the front & rear light assembly was necessary by drilling a small hole into the frame so one can accommodate the marker lights and also bought as a spare part the clear light reflectors (2 each instead of 1). I have now accumulated 5 of these locos, (3 Märklin, 2 Roco) the 2 Roco locos belong to the BLS and I'm waiting for suitable loudspeakers. John  |

under lights (ESU decoders) you've got several options what type of headlight or warning light you would like to use, under ditch light type 1 the headlights increase and decrease in brightness. John |
