Firstly, welcome to the forum.

Then to your question. It depends!

You have to be a little more specific: Into what model do you want to install the decoder. Most helpful will be the article # from the catalog.

Benny is right. I think all of us together have converted most of the different locomotive types.

The big questions, except for the locomotive type, is the inner space and what kind of motor your locomotive has.

Yep, it's not a big project since some producers of decoder has made a Mfx. Maybe the only problem is which loco do you want to convert to Mfx decoder??

Welcome. I agree. the first time is a little intimidating, but it is really easy if you follow the directions and have moderate soldering skills. I would recommend for a first project something with lots of room, such as a V200 or an F7.

Let me slightly correct this statement:

Only older Märklin models don't have decoder sockets.

ALL recent Märklin models with factory installed mfx decoders come already with sockets (actually 21-pin mtc pcb's); thus you have the largest variety of such socket pcbs you can just dream of for almost any kind of Märklin model (my current list contains probably more than 50).

So, just select the corresponding pcb, mount it into the desired loco and plug in the decoder. Besides that you can also use a NEM socket (ESU offers it for example, ready with wiring).

YES - you need to have adequate soldering skills and more for such a task. wink

I was thinking more in terms of changing decoders, lets say from a relatively modern loco with an FX, and wanting to change it to an MFX with sound for example; would that type of conversion be accomplished without soldering??
