I have previously used the 74040 on my grandsons marklin layout.
I have now built him a trix c track layout.
Neither are very large but sufficient to require a feeder wire.
My question is can I use one of the 74040 cables to provide a feeder for the trix layout

That should not be a problem, the wires are polarised so you know which one is which at the other end.
