Hi all

I have some NOS 6080 decoders laying around and was thinking of building up a tandem (double drive) F7 using spare parts.
I would use the original 3 pole motor with either one or 2 6080 decoders but only one common slider.
Anyone ever done that with decent results?

Regards
Jean-Pierre

Hi Jean-Pierre
The 6080 Märklin decoders are of the very first generation dealing with Motorola (Not MM2) so the direction bit is not decoded.
Long story short: you cannot use independent 6080 decoders even with the same slider to drive 2 motors as you run the risk they could run in opposite directions.
Märklin never used 6080 decoders to drive two-motor units (M. used stronger drivers instead).
I think some Märklin fans did try to drive 2 motors with one 6080 and it would probably work as long as you avoid peak currents caused by stalled motors
Note: driving a twin motor unit with a 60906 all-current decoder, capable of 1.6 A motor current would do it probably better
Cheers
Jean

The decoder used in the original 3649 ENMD F7 Demonstrator loco is certainly based on the 6080 decoder, but I haven't checked what they have done to drive the two motors compared to a standard 6080. The decoder uses the original LME07 chip which predates the 717.xx series chips used in the 6090 and later decoders.

Hi
Here is an example of Märklin's way of driving two A/C motors in parallel
Here on a 2-motors A-B-A GM EMD F7 unit where you may see the separate stronger drivers for the motors
