Hi ,

I have a large collection of analog from my childhood times all late 70's and eraly 80's. all still packed away. about 5years ago I started buying random digital trains on ebay....as you do! All with the dream of upgrading one day.
Over Christmas, a German relative visited and brought me a lovely gift of a 39193 museum lok...beautiful..(and very generous of them)...It reignited the bug, and when my wife had to go to Germany recently, she bought me the 29721 digital starter set.
So I just set this up, and am really blown away at the great functioning of these new mfx loco's....sound lights etc...lots of fun.
I started digging through my stored stuff and am having mixed reactions with some of the older digital locos just not responding to the mobile station.
For example....I have a 3618, that has a 6080 decoder in it...I had a look at the decoder and it is set to an address of 47....the mobile station cant find it and if I put in the address still get nothing...I kinda of think I was clever getting this far....Digital is so wow....but now this is frustrating.
What else should I try?

Hello, good morning

Märklin started with the digital system in the mid 80s, and introduced the first mfx decoders about 2004, the big difference between mfx decoders and those that are not, is that the mfx decoders self-identify the Central Station or Mobile Station. Your 3618 locomotive does not have an mfx decoder, as you have already seen it is a 6080 decoder with address 47, so, you have to edit a locomotive similar to the MS database and configure it with address 47, and drive it with address 47. And it should work.

If it doesn't work, the first thing to test is if the decoder receives the commands, as the only function of that locomotive are the lights, turning on and off the lights can be a good test. Also the engine may have been stuck, the engine has been unused for a long time, try to check if the drive wheels can rotate doing a little force on them, if not rotate, we will have to disarm the locomotive and clean the engine, you tell us and explain how to do it. It may also be that some of the dip switches do not make good contact, you can try to change the direction of the locomotive and configure and test again. I understand your frustration, encouragement, I've been enjoying the marklin digital system for many years.

Hi

The 6080 decoder is a MM decoder

So in your Mobile station you have to activate the following protocols
MM
MM2
mfx

The automatic finding of a loco does not works most of the time for those old locos that there was no two way communication between decoder and controller, so is better to register the loco manually.

Of course Antonios replay describe more reasons for problems, so you have to look all these

Thanks for the reply.
Not sure what you mean by “edit a locomotive similar to the MS database and configure it with address 47”? If I follow correctly this is what I have tried...
I changed the dip switches to address #9, then #1, and now on address,#25, have picked out in the database train 3681 on the ms controller, even tried other 4 digit train models. Nothing happens.
Then each time I go into the MS and “change loco” and have entered address to 25....still nothing...no lights. Pushed the train a little and all wheels will turn, but no response from the MS control.
What do you think I should try now?

Which Mobile Station?

Make sure red wire goes to centre rail (B) and brown wire goes to outer rail (0).
6080 decoders will not work when wires are swapped.

Hey Tom.....absolutely excellent....that fixed it straight away. The funny thing was that when setting up there were no instructions that I found on where red and brown wires should go.
Just checked a few more of my older digital trains and now seem to be all running that weren’t yesterday. Big thank you so much....I owe you a beer for that....now I can play some more.BigGrin

When I started with digital -loks with 6080's - K track with track connectors marked B and O - K83's etc - I used to mumble a little mantra whilst I worked "B is not BROWN its RED". Failure to follow ones own advice used to lead to either nothing or expensive smells!

Hello Tim, you mentioned you have a lot of older digital locos, would that be mostly with 6080 or 6090 decoders? How do you manage with the humidity playing havoc on your layout on the Gold Coast?

Hey Dave,
I'm only 5 days into running digital trains for the first time.

I have about 10 x analog loco's from the late 70's early 80's....got them out of storage 5 years ago and they ran allright. At around that time I started buying some digital locos and a few other things, but only last sunday did I set up a digital layout and began trying out the 12 or 13 digital locos....some are delta, some have the 6080 decoders and some the 6090....They are all running ok bar 2 which I think may need just a good clean and lube....I hope anyway.
Hey.. so your on the Gold Coast too?
Is Humidity a real killer? What do you do or suggest?
Before I put this post up I almost emailed you directly for some guidance as I noticed your posts being a local to me. It would be great to meet up with you and get some advice as it's all pretty new to me.....even though Ive had trains for 40 years...I'm just really only starting out now so am a real noobie at it all.
