I bought a Marklin starter set that had a Central Station updated to v2.
Unfortunately the screen appears faulty - black on the right hand side and nothing on the left.

I managed to find another CS1 for sale, bought it, and it was delivered today.
This one has not been updated to v2.

Question 1 : What is the difference between v1 and v2?

Question 2 : Is it worth upgrading, and if so, how do I go about it?

Question 3 : Can I take the gubbins from the non-working v2 one and exchange it with the working v1 one?
(I wouldn't really want to do this, but would if absolutely necessary).

AFAIK there were no changes to the display.
Along with the software update 2.0.3 the units also received some hardware add-ons.

So it is worth a try to get the V2 unit running with the display from the V1 unit.

Tom

Ah. So take the SCREEN from the one I received today and put it into the non-working one.
I hadn't thought of that.

Thing is. Is it simple enough for me to do? I'm not a techy whizz kid.

I never opened my CS1, but I heard it is modular and the screen has flex connector boards.
Maybe it already remedies the screen problems if you pull those connectors out and re-insert them.

I expect that screens can be swapped without soldering. But no guarantee.

As an update, took both units over a mate's today to see about changing the screen over (like suggested above).
However, upon opening the v2 model, we saw that the batteries had leaked, not only totally corroding some of the battery terminals
but also the corrosion had spread onto the main circuit board - it was a bit of a mess!
So instead we switched the new circuit board from the v2 unit (under one of the 'legs') into the v1.

The v1 unit still works perfectly but in the settings, it says v1.1 and software v1.6, so I guess it's the same as before we did anything.

So does anyone know what else changed between the versions apart from the extra little circuit board?

They also upgraded the firmware to 2.0.3. This version allows you to install 2.0.4 from the Märklin website.

BTW: The unit works fine without batteries if you always shut it down. So better do not install batteries at all.
Batteries are only needed for the shutdown, if you unplug the unit before shutdown was completed.
Batteries are not needed when unit is stored.

Thanks Tom.

Would you happen to know what the firmware change was?
Would it be something I can take out of the v2 (broken) machine and put in the V1 machine?

Reading somewhere on this forum, someone had suggested taking the batteries out.
Now I have looked in the instruction manual but cannot find how to shut it down (before removing the plug).

With the updated unit, you press STOP until it shuts down. Not sure if this also works with 1.6.
There must be a Shutdown button somewhere on the System screen of the unit.
