One of my locomotives had not been serviced in a long time so I gave it a good cleaning. However the pickup shoe seems quite dirty and is interfering with the running no matter what I do. Could any of you give me advice on how to fix this issue please ?
Thank You

Depends on what the dirt is. Most pickup shoes or sliders are removable and replaceable. If the dirt is just grease just clean it with some of solvent starting with soapy water and moving up to carbontetrachloride. If the dirt is actually ionization you might need to sand it off with very find sandpaper or one of those 3M cleaning cloths. Start with the 3M. Get some Q-tips to use with the solvents.

You could try and clean it with alcohol or some petrol based solvent. If the surface is corroded some very fine sanding paper might do the trick. Be careful not to bend og get the shoe out of shape or alignment when working on it. Lastly it should be possible to get a replacement pickup shoe.

Edit: rhfil beat me to it :-)

It could also be that there is a bad connection between the shoe and the decoder (or whereever the connection is). Some shoes have wire soldered to it and some have some kind of a contact point between the shoe and the locomotive..
Finally, it's even possible that the bad connection is somewhere else, like between the wheels and the chassis.

What model is it? For Maerklin or Roco, you should be able to find a replacement at Molard or Boiler. If they don't have stock, try ordering from Bahnorama or Eyro.

If the slider is one of the ones without a cable soldered to it and can be mounted 180 degrees opposed, this can often improve the contact.

I would also look and inspect the ground connections (wheel contacts, axle contacts, bogie contact) depending on the model. Many times, the issue is not the third rail, but the ground return.
