No, plastic - same construction as the other 4200-series coaches. This isn't a problem though, they have more than enough weight to stay on the track.

4093 and 4094 have arrived:

Does anyone know which lighting kit these take? They have the old-style bogies (they're the very first versions of 4093/4) so it looks as though 7329 won't fit as they don't have the hole in the centre of the bogie for the slider to clip into.

Hi Matt,

According to the 1976 catalogue, these coaches take the 7324 or 7325 lighting kits. If the bottom of the coach is marked "A", you use 7325, otherwise you use 7324.

I've no idea at the moment if these kits are still available. I can't find them on the Marklin database.

Thanks Ray - I think they use a 7324 but Marklin don't seem to make this now. I can't find an A on them anyway. I have seen 7324 kits brand new unused on ebay but would probably want to wait until I could find/afford a batch of four, as I'll be on the look out for 4091/2 to complete the set and having a mix of lit and unlit coaches would look weird.

Just in case anyone didn't know, these coaches are in DB experimental liveries of the '70s. They were known as POP (don't ask me what it stands for!) liveries. Coaches were painted according to type, so you'd end up with a really colourful train. The idea was eventually developed into the blue/beige and red/beige schemes. See these links for further details:

My collection is made up of trains I have been on on seen during my infrequent travels in Europe. The majority of trains represent swiss and international traffic inside and through Switzerland. All of my tractive power is swiss or international that operates in CH. (Except for the 39579 DB 103 which I got because of the cool pantographs). Since 2006, 103 184 has been given permission to haul trains in CH so I guess that conflict doesn't even apply anymore.

The duplication of trains between 1:87 and 1:100 exists as I have bought some rolling stock to use on the layout from one of the Marklin Start Sets. The 1:87 stock is waiting the eventual completion of a more complicated and permanent layout.

I use memory, photos and resources like www.reisezuege.ch to recreate the consists in model.

I would say that I must have somewhere in excess of 600 coaches by now from era III (1965) to today.

Now if only I could take them to Luzern and let them run on the Gotthard layout.Cool Maybe I'll have to settle for Galleria Baumgartner http://www.galleriabaumgartner.ch/

How would I explain that to the customs officer at Zuerich Airport?
"Oh, I am just taking about 100 loks and 600 coaches to Mendrisio to play with them for an hour or so."
Hmmmm?

Hmmm I have:
- 4 dopplestock coaches, 2 red era V marklin + cab car (all hobby version but with headlight.taillight switch over) and one lima NS coach which sits in the consist, often has a roco half-baggage single deck car with it (blue/cream paint scheme)
- red/cream 1st class car one dining car with pantograph (marklin) + 2 roco blue/cream 2nd class cars trailed by a marklin SBB cab car (push-pull operations are a nessecity and this seemed like the most suitable cab car to go with the set)
- special "senic train" consisting of red/cream marklin cars, one metal dining car, one dome car and one 1st class car with tail lights
- knorr spagghettari commuter car set, marklin, very special set that I purchased from the marklin museum when I was traveling through germany in '03

Hoping to add a rake of piko IC cars (ICE like scheme) with a marklin cab car and a piko br101 in the near future :)
Ep IV / V Marklin Layout
6 track dead end station, twin track loop, 4 track through station.
Under construction.

You did well to get the Rheingold and Helvetia coach packs (assuming these are the 1:100 length ones?). They seemed to sell out instantly and now fetch high prices on the used market.

Yes Matt, they are the 1/100 scale. They are nic. Brass window frames, nice lighting. I think they were made at Sonneberg, but I am not sure. I hope they will accept the current conducting close couplers. It is a long consist to remove from the layout. he Sudwind TEE restaraunt car is a lighter cream/red color, but the moving pantograph is cool. It's a noisy train because there are four pick-up shoes on it currently. I'd much rather hear the wheels on the rails.

Ps. Matt, if you decide you want a sudwind restaurant car, it is not set up for lighting. I suppose it can be done, but the cable from the pezo motor to the pantograph has to unobstructed.

Thanks, I was wondering about that. Rather hoped that Marklin would do the sensible thing and provide it with factory fitted lighting controlled by the decoder, they should have fitted current conducting couplers wired to the decoder too so you could use it straight from the box to control lighting on a complete train. If it doesn't have that I'll probably just buy a 4294 instead as I feel £91 a bit steep for a single coach that doesn't have everything it could have. It should be possible to rewire it to provide track power to adjacent coaches via the couplers, I've done this with a 4297 restaurant car.

You should be able to drop the close couplers straight into your coaches, my Sudwind set now has them. I just need another four lighting units to get my TEE set fully illuminated with one slider providing power for seven coaches. Bear in mind that you need to keep a standard close coupler on the ends of the set as the current conducting sort won't couple to the standard type and will short out against metal couplers.

Good idea Matt. The older TEE and Swiss diner cars had pantograph current pick-up for lighting. I don't think the panto on the sudwind can do that. I don't know if Marklin left out lighting for cost, or because of the pezo motorised panto.

The drivers cabs are lighted, but they both light together. Marklin should coordinate them with the reversing head/marler lights.

I've never really understood why they fit lights inside cabs. To understand why, try this simple test: Go out to your car after dark, climb in, and turn the interior light on. Now consider how much you can see outside!

I would have thought it far more likely that the instruments would be dimly lit and nothing else, to allow the driver's eyes to get used to the darkness and see more.

The 3653 doesn't have a sound unit - it's old tech (made between 1985-87 in the case of mine, it's a 3653.2). They seem to have made five different versions in all. Mine is near perfect apart from a broken cab step and the pantographs being a bit scruffy (not rusty, just a bit tarnished). Long term plans for it include close coupler heads and new pantographs.

It looks as though Marklin only offered 120 002-1 "Furth" as a 3653. To get 120 001-3 "Nurnburg" you need a 3153. I've been vaguely hunting one of them for my automated end to end layout anyway, as I think the 6600 would probably fry the decoder in my 3653.

They seem much cheaper than Br. 103s for some reason. I'd love a 3053 or 3054 but they seem to go for crazy money even with paint damage.

Hi,

I don't know how many passenger cars I have, but surely will know soon enough.

Until recently I thought I didn't like plastic cars (passenger that is) but after going through this thread I realized that I actually have 6 x Trix Prussians, 2 x Trix Prussian express cars, 3 x M* DRG Express cars, 4 x M* Donnerbuchsens, and 6 x M* 3 axle umbauwagens.

Rest are all metal ones: a complete D-zug set (5 cars) + few D-zug cars, a complete TEE set (5 cars), the VT11.5 set with 2 cars (if that counts), some older small cars, some F-zug cars (trying to complete the set), a Rheingold, and Hag Südostbahn triebwagen.

So in total this makes about ... 46-ish. Pretty close to the end: I now need about 3 F-zug cars, and 2 silberlings (of one a steuerwagen).

I also have the latest Bavarian freight-passenger car set on order.

Yep, that's it.

Regards,

Cem.
3 rail: C-track with CS2 2 rail: Trix C-track with Trix MS - K.Bay., DRG, DR, DB, SBB, TCDD

Now all eras but no ICE

I'm not entirely sure what to make of the metal coaches. Yes they're a piece of history but the early plastic ones are too, and they're usually cheaper in the same condition. My 4095/96/97 look very good indeed considering their age and lack of boxes, just need to match the silver and cream paint so I can touch up a few wear marks.

Tony, I didn't expect that you would sell it to me wink so I have been looking for one on eBay. Then suddenly it was there in a set with a green similar one:

Hi Benny,
Sorry but I have just found your reply.
You were right - no sale biggrin biggrin

But any chance of a pic or two being posted?
'Tis a Roco model I assume - what model number?
And what is the running number?

Cheers

I got myself two Marklin 43232. For a nice price.
One second class coach is still in order. They had a max speed limit of 160 km/h.
They will be used after my br01 and br61.

I like the Marklin/Trix skirted coaches, but I think the Liliput ones are more detailed. Here's a comparison shot of a Liliput Epoch 2 version next to a Trix Epoch 3 Rheingold version:

The Liliput one seems to have better vents on the roof, and is a lot cheaper. The only minus point is that they're glued together so getting inside to add lights and figures will be very difficult. Given I only paid £10 for it in the big Liliput sale I'm not too bothered about that.

One of the new (ish) Fleischmann 5665 mitteleinsteigwagen. A perfect match to the new 1:93 length Marklin stock and a prototype Marklin don't offer. That said, I'd be surprised if they never make them. You can also buy an all 2nd (5666) and a steuerwagen (5664). I don't fancy converting the steuerwagen to three rail (emulating the Marklin reversing switch would be tricky) but I will probably buy a 5666 at some point.
