I was wondering is it possible to convert 2 rail to 3 rail or should I just put in an extra line for 2 rail locomotives. I am wondering this because I would like one of these Rivarossi but they are 2 rail. Any help. Can I use c track and connect a DC controller to it and then run DC locos there, thanks :)

Hi all,
Jeff, short answer-yes. Your problem would be mounting a slider(s) on this set.Not impossible.

Maybe Rivarossi make (or will make) a 3R version of the set.
If not, either modify the train (as our good Dr recommended) or modify Märklin tracks for 2R operation (easy with C and K track except for some turnouts).

Or feed the DC train from catenary (but don't buy DC diesel or steam locos if you go this way (will also work with DC street cars)).
Regards
Tom

Hi all,
Good post,as usual Tom!ThumpUp
Yes,Rivarossi may make this in a 3 rail version,or you can run it as Tom suggests.

Hi Jeff,all,
Yes,I think with C you have to isolate the running rails from each other.(?)

Not really, there just seems to be lots more brands but I think I will keep it all 3 rail and start off on an 8 x 4 layout and then move up. It seems easy enough to get AC versions of locos though as I already fancy some. I have acually been on more German Trains than Northern Irish Trains! BigGrin

Hi,
I figure it is probably the unit with pantograph that is powered.
Right?
It is possible in 99.9% of the cases to mount a pick up shoe either directly under the powered unit or under the adjacent trailer coach.
You also need to rewire the wheels' pick ups to make it a real 3-rail vehicle, then add a decoder (if you run in digital)
Additionally one needs to adjust the inner flange spacing of all axles to 13.8 mm to fit Märklin rails.
Then to finish it up, run a pair of wires+ connectors though the trailers to power head- and taillights
Not hard (done it literally hundred of times) , but it always takes time and a little experience for good professional looking results.
Cheers

Usually this is not required on C track or K track.
I'd leave the wheels as they are as long as there are no problems with derailing.

Anyone is entitled to his own opinion....BigGrin
"Opinion" in this case formed statistically on historical ratio between *pass* and *fail* Wink
