Hi all

I always like to have lighting in my coaches...which must be flicker free. Now I am using Marklin the extra rail certainly helps to avoid any flicker. However rather than have a pick up on each coach I tried the electrical coupling set but have to say it is not very reliable and a bit hit or miss when fitting. Previously I used the Roco 4 pole couplers and have tried them with the Marklin coaches....you really only need one of the wires...and find they work well.
Anyone else had experience with the Marklin couplers and find they are OK?
Regards
David

David,

Like you I have found the Marklin current conducting couplers very difficult to work with particularly on long trains. I have converted all of my passenger coaches (over 150) to Roco 4 pole. They are reliable and easy to work with. I have used the extra wires in some cases to turn the lights on and off with a decoder. I have even one set where I turn the lights on and off in each coach individually.

Me too. I certainly prefer Roco 4 pole; I have them between cars, but not between cars and loco; in that way I can change loco and direction of travel.

And I have full use of the four poles; I don't understand how you get flickerfree with only one pole... I also like the idea of individual light control; my train sets are only 3-4 coaches.

Thanks for replies guys. Interesting to note that you also use the Roco couplers. Lars, if you use one of the Marklin pickups you only need one wire from the coach with the pickup shoe. Probably not the best way I agree but saves on some wiring.
I am a great believer in lighting and include all the station buildings etc which when the main layout lights are off gives a completely different effect to the scene.
JUst quickly on another matter, I joined the insider club in January and have still not received anything from them. Perhaps this is just the UK being slow as usual?

Aha David,
you have a separate decoder in every coach? I use one function decoder for the train set. Typically I use the connections in this way:
1. Function 1
2. Function 2
3. Decoder ground
4. Extra wheel contacts / track ground.
So in each direction from the decoder I have two separate functions (if the decoder permits). In the other direction I use Function 3 and 4.

Actually, I have only 2 trainsets equipped in this way, and both are exceptions!!! The first is Würtemberg train set with 3 passanger coaches, and a heating car in the middle containing the decoder. So I use only 3 functions here, and have extra wheel contacts in one direction, and the pickup shoe in a passanger car in the other direction (as the slider fits better in a boogie).

The other train set has only 2 passanger coach, and one luggage coach. So only the decoder is in one end, but nevertheless each coach is individually controlled.

Regards,
Lars

You must rectify the AC current with a rectifier or diode bridge to feed an electrolytical capacitor (a 50V 250 microF is fine) in turn feeding the light circuit.

WARNINGS:

1 - Isolate AC ground from the lamps.

2 - NEVER feed AC current to an electrolytical capacitor: it will explode violently, with 100% probability.

3 - DO MIND for correct electrolytical capacitor polarity or, same as above....

Otherwise, install things correctly and enjoy flicker free lights on your coaches...
