Being restricted to a small room in the house my layout ws 21.M X 1.2 m and a Single Level. as the trains were breading like flies a decision was made some time ago to "design" and Build a New Table.

DImensions are 2.1M X 1.65M. and be a 3 level (well almost) layout.
there will be 300mm height difference between the storage and the working area and a one track Helix.
The bottom layer will be for storage, Hidden Staging yard). the working part of the layout will be loosly based on the Noch 81660 layout (it will be a bit fatter)

This layout is 3 levels, but the top and bottom level are about 60mm difference from the middle layout.

I mocked up a 2.1X1.65 top and with xxup's (Adrian ) held we began to mock up some track laying to get an idea of how much storage we may get. we got a good idea but then ran out of Switches and Curves, but we now have a good idea of where we are going.

The track down will come down the Helix on the Right-hand side, along the back and be flat at the front Left. on front right we start the staging lines. Photo attached of how far we got in our mock up.

Nothing will be done until after Christmas when I will start to dismantle the Current layout. In the meantime have to draw the plan and purchase a lot of R1 or R2 track and more switches (Points).

anyway a start was made.

Henrik advises against having an R1 helix, but I guess in your case Nev, you don't have much choice! Good luck with the new layout.

P.S You could use xtrkcad4 to design your layout on the computer, just to see how everything fits.

Good thing that you keep the helix R2. That will probably work perfectly with trains up to 2 meters long.
Although the bottom storage level will obviosly be packed with R1 and short points, I´d recommend you to plan in a few R9 cruves on the visible parts of the layout. -At least if you are going to decorate the layout with landscape.
I will shamelessly suggest that you take a look on my homepage, and check out the "costom designs" mentioned there. I´ll also be happy to help draw you an optimized plan.
One question though; Are you sure you want to go for an advanced multilevel layout with your damaged arm (or is the damage not so severe now?)
Best regards

Thanks for the offer. Not going to start anything except plan between now and about mid January. Hopefully arm (now the Left one) gets fixed in 10 days. then 8 weeks in a sling. Then with some assistance I should be able to get something done.

I will send a PM.

thanks again.

And money too... biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

The irony is that I probably have enough m-track to have built Nev's new layout... Apart from the first bits that I got brand new from the dealer, it cost me on average about 10c for a straight.. $10 for a turnout.. Nev is looking a $5 per track and his other arm for a fully functioning turnout[:(][:(][:(] That's just nuts for plastic...

I have to say though, that C track fits nicely... Can't do the sneaky things that you can do with M-track when the ends don't quite meet after an elaborate design.. [:I][:I][:I]

It certainly was fun today...

Yes you can always 'fudge' it with M track. You sure can't with C track!

Nice project, Nev.

We are looking forward for the progress, but we obviously have to be patient for a couple of months.
By the way, my idea about a helix in a future layout is that a single track should be R2, and a double track mihgt be R1 downhill and R2 uphill.

a New Start
Well the arm is continuing to improve. I now have plenty of movement but no strength but that is changing daily.

Well I have begun the demolition Phase.
I have removed all of the wee Fold and animals and carefully packed away, no doubt never to be found again.

Next are the trees, lights and buildings. then after I clear out under and behind the table, remove the legs and take it outside to remove structure and tracks etc.

Once that is done the extension is made and attached.
Then track laying and wiring for the storage area can begin. I see that stage at least a month away. I have some workers (slaves) who will assist; they work for Beer and Icecream.
All we need now is the trackplan for the lower area.
The upper levels will be approx 300mm above the lower and I have added a colour photo of what I will modify. I have 100mm longer and 650mm wider so can make significent additions.
I have the Brawa Cable car to go in and a lot of track. Just notices that I will have to get the curved bridge approaches.

More as it happens.
Photos should be better. I have read the manual on how to take close up photos and I received a tripod for my birthday.

Well the Destruction Before Construction has began.

Removed every thing well, almost. most packed in boxes to be used later.
Today was only to get the table cleared and move some of the Junk from under the table.
Have not got the track plan for the storage level yet but it will be a few weeks before I get that far.

It will be a week or two before I am ready to summon the slaves to take the monster outside for further demolition:
Bridge and Level crossing remain to be removed as well as a few bits and Pieces, 3 carriages , helio and a Loco. It is still usable

Hi Nev
I admire what you can accomplish is such a small space.
In the 80's I too only has such a small space to play with and couldn't never complete anything!!

Jacques,
Thankyou for the Kudos,
That layout happened as I wanted it to do and made it fit.
It has been great fun. But before I finished it I realised I needed multi levels.

She who must be obeyed insisted that the layout as seen had to be finished. well it was. Now is the time to march forward.
Progress reports as it happens but I do not expect anything substantial to report for a few weeks.

In Brisbane this weekend at the Railway Musuem there is a Model railway convention. XXu[, self and Damon are attending.

There is atour through the workshops and behind the scenes view of the museum and workshops.

The Museum is sited on the Queensland Railway workshops.

I promise Photos.

I must sadly report that further destruction/construction is deferred for at least 8-10 weeks.
I tried to do a demolition job on my newest tin Shoulder. (October 2008). did considerable damage and put a fracture in my clavicle. No surgury required but left arm is immobilised, so impossile to work. so will oad it up with some trains and play for a while.

Hi Nev,
Take care, dream of trains.
Hope you can use the time to do a little planning and fore-thought.

Nev, take care and get well soon. It'll be some time but it should get OK again!
Nice to see a NS/Railion 6500 on your layout!

Thanks all for the encouragement and thoughts.

Had some fun yesterday Damon brought out his Big Boy for a little gallop. WE had to do a little destruction so as it would get through two of the tunnel portals and also widen a cutting. ran nicely, a great loco but convinced me that I do not need one as the layout is too short.

Gee Nev, the solution is obvious! Build a layout that fits the Big Boy!

You are now appointed chief Negotiator with my FD on that topic.
However it is a requirement that you do have a good health insurance with plenty of hospital cover. biggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Nev,
How long is the FD's reach. Here in New England I'm about as far in either direction as is possible. So if I can be of any assistance...

Nev, how about a lease or rental arrangement?
Give the BB a gallop every now and then (since I don't actually have a layout at the moment), then hide it away whenever Rita gets suspicious...winkwinkwink

You will have to feed him, though -- a hungry beast (smoke fluid, oil...) wink

Cheers,
Damon
