Great photos, AK. Thanks. During the 1950s Germany was on the rise economically but

many people could still not afford to travel so trains were a-lot shorter. This is great

news today for us modelling Era III. Trains that actually fit our station platforms.

I love it! Love Peter BigGrin

Good evening,

Well, I did not know if I should post these rather in the thread of the most ardent New Haven fan or in the Prototype section for short trains. So, I split evenly and posted two out of the total of four here and the other two there. Now, here we go: FL9 with New Haven paint scheme and two coach train in Croton Harmon for service to New York in October 1991. Photos are courtesy of the Eastbank Model Railway Club (www.eastbank.org.uk).

Another short one; DRGW (notice a theme with my choice of railroad yet?) "Royal Gorge" at Cotopaxi, Colorado in 1967. This is near the end of hte line for the Royal Gorge, it was cancelled four months later. (Info source: http://www.railpictures.net/vie...php?id=403096&nseq=7)

And another short one on "Hunsrückbahn" from Boppard (on the Rhine valley) to Emmelhausen. Until 2009 diesel push-pull trains with (only) two Silberling carriages.

Thank you for the wonderful pictures. You made my morning coffee taste better!
Does any one know why the V 200 or 221 are in pairs while the DSB Nobab are usually alone? The trains seem short, so I assume it is not the weight of the train being pulled. I had always thought the V 200 was a ver good puller.
Time to go to the train room and run a short train.

Nice photos all. Ak, I was never far from the New Haven diesels when I was growing up

in the East Bronx. I watched these Loks go by many times as I would ride my bicycle to

the tracks which was about 10 city blocks from our home. Fun memories.

Hi Dreadnought,

The German narrative says: As a preliminary measure, these engines were on loan to the Danish State Railway DSB to bridge the time until the delayed delivery of the then new DSB Class ME. In 1981 the V200 was at the end of its lifespan. As it was not considered reliable any more, they were run in double traction.

It's just a speculation that they were not considered reliable IMHO.

The facts are:
DSB class ME came with a delay of a few years.
Class ME has 3300 hp.
DB class 220 has 2200 hp only.
The manufacturer of class ME had to provide locos to substitute the missing ME locos.
So a single BR 220 would have had less power than the ME it had to substitute. If a single motor fails, the double header will still have the 3300 hp of the class ME.

Some of the pictures show long trains. And if the timetable was made for a loco with 3300 hp, a single loco with 2200 hp will have problems with a long train.

Please note that there are only BR 220 locos on the pictures, no BR 221 locos. AFAIK only BR 220 supports double headers controlled from a single train driver while BR 221 does not.
Regards
Tom

There were some similar pictures in the link that River posted recently, conveniently collapsing ideas about prototypical rigour.

Märklin sold the Merkur set #43290 with two blue coaches and a dining coach - and I hope it's prototypically correct (nice GFN coaches in a Märklin box).
Märklin also made two Bavaria sets, each with two coaches and and a dining coach (#43859, #26557). There are several prototype pictures that show that train (formerly the route was serviced by SBB RAm rail cars).

BTW - re. the short Alco PA-hauled Santa Fe trains: Those Chicago-Los Angeles "Grand Canyon" trains were in 1967 and 1968 occasionally quite short, consisting of just one baggage car and two coaches. Even though off-topic, I felt compelled to contrast the former with the extremely long train with the nine F-units, since this was also a "Grand Canyon" in 1960.

Hi Friends, when the above photo was taken the USA was not in recession but was

So, I give it a try, too. Although not disposing of exactly the same coaches as on the prototype photo, I tried at least to catch the spirit - see pic.
