How many hours a week do you devote to your model railroading hobby? Do you work on it daily or just on the weekends? Or when time permits?

I work on the layout or on other projects (engine conversions, electronics, etc) 3-4 evenings a week, usually 2-3 hours each evening. Wish I had more time to do it, but I do have other priorities in my life (unfortunately) Smile

I typically work on my layout three to four hous a week, unless of course a shipment arrives with digital components.

My two MGBs and my Rover P4 keep me busy as well so I am never without something to do.

I do not have a layout [:(], so I am with Robert: only when a shipment arrives... So there are weeks where nothing much happens, and others when I am "at it" for 2-3 hours each night.

With a carpet Layout, you can imagine... Twice a year, perhaps.

Only a look around the forum biggrin

Playing or working on layout construction on 2-3 evenings a week, and on a few week ends over the year. It strongly depends on the job, and on a few other time consuming activities, of course. Actually mrr is one of the best ways of relaxation that I know.

Not much, maybe about 5 hours a week at the moment, and only planning. Still waiting for a bunch of trackwork to arrive, then I'll start experimenting a bit more with blocks and computer controlled routes.

All H0 activity is pretty much on hold indefinately though, just no room

Highly variable. From zero on several months in a row, up to 8 hours in a single day.

Very dependant on my personal time availability, willingness to delve into MRR, family, etc.

My last few weeks have been the most prolific ever in MRR.

Also very variable. As more and more things functions, I spend more and more time playing with it, rather than keep building on the layout.
Some times I work flat out every spare hour of the evenings+weekends, other times I hardly go down into the basement.
Still I think I am working/playing with the trains for at least 7 hours a week, as a MINIMUM.

Building the layout: 2 times per week, 2-3 hours every session.
(I'm lucky because I build the layout with two friends of mine, so it's easier to have a regular frequency on our meetings.)
Work on models: (maintenance, tuning, etc.): from 2 to 4 hours every week.

When I do have a layout, during the week I don't spend much time on it due to time constraints, but on the weekends/holidays I will spend 5-6 hours a day sometimes more. Depends upon what I am able to do to the layout, and how much play time I have.

Hi Bob,

Since I have no layout yet,I spend most of my available time for railroading on this forum and other modelrailroad related websites.

Once in a while I let my locos run on a temporary carpet layout.

All in all I spend an avarage of 2 hours a week on the hobby.

Guus
Kind regards,
Guus

I don't have a layout and I'm playing on the timber flooring in the livingroom. Therfore I have to ask my wife, but she always says thank god he is not addicted to football... :-) Most of the time a have support by my son and if he is asking his mum she can't say no... All in all this is in the summer time quite rare, but in the winter time nearly every weekend. For the carpet players I can recommend this site even it is in German only but just check the project links! http://www.extrem-teppichbahning.de/

Thanks for the interesting link, city night line.

I don't have a layout, either.
So, in the summertime I spend very little time with my trains, except if it's rain for longer periods.
In wintertime maybe an hour or so per night, rebuilding, testdriving on the living room table, and a lot of time in front of this PC.
Best regards Svein, Norway

Ditto for me...during pre-mid-post summer I am mostly an outdoor person...but since it is winter now and early dark the spend hours start to count!

But mostly composing and running trains...

Sometimes I try to squeeze more rolling stock on the tracks or try to 'optimize' my fully space-2-track optimized plan...and that takes time wink

Thanks everyone for your replies. After I posted this and started to read the reply's, I failed to answer my own question. As for myself, I do not have a permanent HO layout as of yet, I do have a nice N Guage permanent layout that consist of Minitrix, Kato, Bachman and a few other odd brands.

Now not being married I guess might be the key to how much time one is allowed to play with the Trains. So I play with mine at least somewhat daily when I am home or not over my girlfriends house. So I would probably say that I play with them about 5+ hours a week. Sometimes more, sometimes less but that is a conservative average I would say.

So for those that do play with their trains on a regular basis, how many are married and have children?

I see that our friend Lutz has not answered this as of yet. Come on Lutz, how many hours do you play with your trains a day???

Bob
