I haven't spent much time on my layout lately, busy getting projects done before the snow really flies (snow already started yesterday).

Hi Ian,

I spent about three hours fiddling around with my layout design and the stupid software that I am working with. I still haven't got a layout that seems right to me.

Cheers,

Apart from carrying the temporary backdrop downstairs, supposedly to replace some panel pins with screws, nothing. There is still a lot to do but I keep procrastinating as I don't have the tools to produce the roadbed for the branch line which climbs from the main station, but especially as I am dreading starting on the landscaping. The one person who would love to help with the latter lives almost as far away from me (in the UK) as possible which, to say the least, is a bit of a drawback!

Well I don't feel so bad now. Good thing is I still have my fingers into the hobby. Currently I am finishing the translating of the last section of a document from German to English, hope to get back to my trains soon.

Started reading a novel - Eagle in the sky - by Wilbur Smith. Until I finish it I will not have any inclination to work on my layout.

I received a shipment from ETS couple of days ago. Consists for Faller/Vollmer buildings, turnout motors and decoders. Need to incorporate them into my layout.

Sunday was spent on a dealer visit arranged through the Car Club. I did get one objective completed and that was to grease the brake and fuel lines but noticed a seep from one of the PAS pipes [:(!]
The other objective of trying a 1 series fell flat when the sales staff couldn't find one. [:0]

Working on your layout needs to be orgainised, i.e., you must have a plan and keep reasonably close to it. I personally lack initiative, so I have arranged for a friend and I to work on the layout every Friday - all day, if possible. Working with someone gives spirit and encouragement to each other - also, there is ideas exchange, where you can discuss techniques, layout options, etc. and this usually results in a great looking layout section. Lunchtime is usually the highlight of the day - at the pub . . . biggrinbiggrinbiggrin
Take it easy . . . . or any other way you can get it !!!!

Today, I was mostly testing my just-arrived Viessmann semaphores :-) (4500/4501/4601) Yes our postman has been busy this week :-D

And that testing involved some Real Work: drilling and sawing in test pieces of plywood.

Hi Ian,
Yes I did the same for about the same time. Now it's cocktail time
here at east coast usa. I screwed a-lot of stinger boards and then started
on the risers. I'll start laying track on that side of the layout tomorrow.
I don't have a digital camara so I'm not able to send photos. Enjoy! Peter

I really wish I had some time to spend on my layout - I haven't touched it since I dislocated my shoulder in an accident 3 months ago - now the arm is pretty much back to full use again, but somehow so many other things have got in the way - hopefully will get back to the layout again in 2 or 3 weeks' time.

Spent about an hour in the train room and ran 4 of them today. The Mikado log train, the long UP diesel freight, the Santa Fe Chief and the NYC freight. I get out there about twice a week.

Today was the first time I've used the heater in there since last March but it will warm up again for the rest of the week to about 30C. I plan to cut more firewood over the next few days since we use a combinaion of fuel for heat in the winter. Propane, electricity and wood. It spreads out the cost that way. The wood is from our own oak trees that breakdown in storms or die of old age.

Cheers, Bob

Hi Ian,

Hellix construction has been simplified by "Woodland Scenics" risers. They are made from polystyrene in pre-determined gradients, 2%.3% or 4% and they are very flexible and can be easily pinned into position while you apply hot glue. I made my hellix in less than 2 hours.

They are a bit difficult when you need 3 circuits all of the same size.

Ian,
I noticed that you cut a full circle. waste of ply,
Make 1/4s and join together.

I'm an ex-BMW Car Club member and will probably rejoin in the new year, now I have an E34 and an E36 to look after. I also have some rusty brake pipes on the E36 that will need doing soon.[:(]

Regarding the layout, all the track is now dismantled for the umpteenth time and it's getting too cold in the loft to lay track now, but enthusiasm levels are sky high and progress is being made.Smile
