I confess I did it (some day I'll tell Wife so ya better don't tell her first ... [}:)])
Well, she's a beautyful German (25) and she wanted to leave her former master, an old man in his seventies. He had taken possession of her just three days ago, but she was lonely and unhappy there. When visiting his residence she whispered "take me!" ... I had no choice, for 100 bucks she was mine.
Since she was nice but dirty we had to go to the bathroom first, and after a thorough clean-up (not the slightest scratch on her skin) she showed me what she can !!! I'm still dizzy ... biggrin

Wanna know her name and number ??? E194091-5 (#3022.5 - the only "short roof" E194 model), built in 1980 in Western Germany. My man, what a piece of analog excellence & quality !!! She's my 6th Gator, now, and she looks, humms and runs like brand new [:p][:p][:p]

John

Will post a family picture next week ...

To all of our American forum friends please correct if I'm wrong ,but gator is an acronym for alligator or crocodile.
The Swiss Be 6/8 was I believe the first loc nicknamed crocodile ,because of it's form. And any loc resembling this form is also called crocodile or gator if you want.

Best regards
Guus
post scriptum: Don't know if our Australian or English members use the word gator as well.

Hi Alonso,
I confirm, and add, for to call a loco Crocodile it must have fronts articulated. (sorry for my English).
If you look at a croco run over a succession of bends you can understand why it's so named, [:p][:p][:p], and Swiss, where it's born, is full of wonderful bends.
For me, it's the must beatiful loco never built.

Nikos Smile: Gators (aka Alligators aka Crocodile aka Cocodrillo) are those long-nosed green beasts we are playing [:p][:p][:p] with here. Alas, this species is long gone now (except for museums) but in our small MRR world they can live forever. Generally it subdivides into an Swiss, an German and an American branch (although the only U.S. Gator GG-1 isn't really articulated, but what shalls biggrin)
Most of the time darn expensive but sometimes ya can find a real bargain - like my excellent $100 #3022 from last week ...

if that is a gator then i have one too the famous 39560,
i have to admit that event in that scale that little creature is still a beast!!!
i hope they will reproduce the grey croco with a mfx c-sinus motor
and i am worried if the change in the digital system will affect my 39-560
he is a must have,i am thinking of buying the plastic case only for him,he worths that.
But his pantographs are a little problem, since i do not have catenary i do not care...

There are two legends (that I know) to explain the name "Krokodil":
- some say it's a joke about the name "Cockerill" (a loco engineer)
- some say it's because the locos look like crocodiles.

Cockerill built three steam locos with engineer's cab in the middle of the loco - according to that definition, the V100 would also be a crocodile ...

If you define "crocodile" by behaviour (on turnouts), you would have to include German E91, too!
If you define "crocodile" by shape, than German E69 will qualify, too.
Regards
Tom

According to this definition, well, my car is a crocodile, too! The "cab" is in the middle.

Thats valuable news. I'll keep that in mind for the day when I'll resell it.Smile

Never. Cos there's nothing to forgive, my friend Smile. Asking questions is a sign of cleverness [:p] - thus a thing like a stupid question doesn't exist.

As I understand it (From old M* catalogsbiggrin) the SBB had Crocodilles or Crocks.
DB/OBB had Alligators or Gators. (Except for OBB 1089 Croc)

Next year maybe for my first Croc.[:p]
As for gators, I just did a nose count[:o)] and came up with 10[:0]. Not counting Gramps (E93).
Plus One Roco 1020 on order and two E93s in the mail.wink
(The count does include the twins. Somehow I wound up with two 194-112-9[:o)])

Well, I can only speak for myself. There are many German Märklin forums, you will find a huge number of German Märklin enthusiasts there.

So why do they not participate in this international forum ?? Maybe it has to do with language abilities, I don't know.

What I do know is that the multinational participants in this forum are a funny bunch, knowledgable experts and above all:
the most distinguished and polite number of gentlemen ever seen and read in any forum !!! Yes !!

Unfortunately, M* is not my company. Otherwise I would be very rich and happy, as I had sold all these wonderful gators shown here in the thread.

Gatormaster - such can happen when collecting too hard ... biggrin
Alberto - got 'em, again. Thanks Smile
Johann - you're too kind. All the best back to you Smile

BTW, got a question, please. I know German and American Gators were in freight AND passenger service. How about the Swiss one - did she see any passenger duty, too ?

Thanks,
John

Hi John,
As far as I know the Swiss Croc's were freight only for the Gotthard route. From what I've been told, unlike most other railroads, the SBB ordered most their locomotives to be designed for a specific purpose, be it freight/passenger/a special route like the Gotthard. Therefore until era 4/5 few locomotives did regular service as both
