After the kind advice I have a few pics.Beware of dodgy hotels but otherwise a great place.

The station is truly magnificent, if shrouded by building work for a new Underground. There si a very interesting Tram museum line on an old suburban branch line at Harlem Meer Station, really impressive old trams.

Next time I pan to do some steam, there a lot a train stuff there.

Lovely trams indeed... Thanks for the pics, makes me think I "need" a tramway on a future layout...

Yes, Amsterdam is a great city. The station is a great place for train watching (my grandson and I spent several hours on the platforms). As to hotels, we stayed in the Mercure in Utrecht.

Last summer I went to Holland too. I agree with you about Amsterdam station: a wonderful building and a great place to see trains!

I just want to add pics about the most interesting train I saw:
EN to Moscow, with carriages for many other destinations. Reading the table in the station is enough to make you dream!

UserPostedImage

The train is composed by German and russian carriages. Some pics about russian ones, I never saw them:

Hi: The fun thing about travelling into the former Soviet Union by train is that the track width is different there than in the West. Thus, somewhere where you cross that old mystical line from West to East, the carriages have to be refitted with new wheels.--MM

I did the trip to Leningrad as was in 1991, as the coup happened. Go out there fine, bogie change was at Brest Livotsk, asget I had been seen looking out at some steam locos , a Border Guard had my film..They slit each coach ran into a shed and jacked up the coach and rolled SZD bogies. Not quick but as I recall infinitely preferable to Aeroflot as it was then.

Getting back- impossible the platzcarte was not possible so I had to fly back to Berlin.
