What do you guys use for smoke oil?
I don't mean the Marklin or Seuthe smoke oils, I'm interested to find out what alternative oils are out there.
I did read somewhere in this forum that lamp oil does the job.

What do you use? Does it work well?

Thanks

I'm using "Trix Modellbahn-Fluid (66624)" - this can be used both as a smoke oil and a track cleaner. Works great (then again - never tried anything else biggrin)

I've used Trix...works good. I am now working on a large bottle of Seuth oil. It works fine, too. I generally stay with the recommended products and don't use substitutes.

Followup question: I've always been worried that the smoke will leave a oily residue on the trains and wagon. Is that a problem? If so how quickly does it arise and how do you clean it?

I use Conrad 217334 (www.conrad.de). Cheapest I could find.

I believe you can use simple liquid parafin which, if you can find it somewhere in a drugstore, should be even cheaper.

Prtesently I use Vollmer smoke oil, Nr. 4116, it's in a 250 ml bottle. No problem with residues here.

Smoke oil form Märklin, Trix, Seuthe, Conrad, Vollmer,... it's all the same, I think, produced by BASF, DuPont, Rhone-Poulenc etc.

I would strongly discourage to use lamp oil or some other organic liquid for the smokers, even it it works fine. However, we don't know whether there is benzene in. The guys who make the smoke oil have to do a very careful job in order to remove the benzene, as this is very toxic and even suspected to cause cancer.

I found that the 72270 needs about 60 mircoliters per minute (in a digital loco). So my 250 ml bottle should suffice for almost 3 days and nights of continuous smoker operation. biggrin

Depends on the beer! biggrin

But usually I keep the beer for myself and leave the oil for the smoke generator. This yields the best result for both.

Great info! I was wondering if the ma 72270 uses 60 micro liters per minute, does that imply that is the capacity, and then again, how does one measure 60 micro liters.

I had a bad habit of spilling the smoking oil until I started using the (for shame) LGB stuff ( # 50010, @ .25ml) I also discovered that I was able to secure the oil better, and didn't lose as much because I neglected to fasten the cap properly. IMHO

Gene, I had the same problem as you: I always spilled the smoke oil over the loco. These smoke oil bottles have some type of "filler" tube, but this is thing is a joke.

So I am now using a 5 ml syringe to inject the oil into the smoke generator, with a 6 cm long medical hollow needle (Huh, my dentist has once anesthetized my teeth using such a needle [:0]) I rasped the sharp tip of the needle off, so no danger any more.

Now I have perfect control over steam oil quantity, and nothing is spilled any more. I found that the optimal quantity of steam oil is 150 - 200 microliter. This is sufficient for about 3 minutes of smoke. so I estimated the 60 microliter per minute. Filling more steam oil will drown the heater filament, so you won't get any smoke.

BTW beer consumption per minute is higher, naturally Cool

"This is sufficient for about 3 minutes of smoke."

Is this typical of how long must engines smoke? I had my BR50 repaired with the suethe smoke and it usually last that long, probably shorter if I timed it. Just curious......

Cabernet Sauvignon smoke oil ? Or even "Huile du Vapeur Chateau Neuf du Pape". Hmm, and when the bottle is empty you'll have a terrible head ache.[:o)]

But they should develop a smoke oil for black smoke, as the smoke on real steam locos. This would be a true innovation.

The basic ingredient of smoke oil is propylene glycol. I don´t know if it´s mixed with water. It´s not necessary that it be p.a (pro analyse).Best regards.

Is there anything special a person has to do once you have added the liquid smoke to the locomotive to get it to start smoking?

Except for switching on the smoke generator, nothing. A lot of Märklin models are as you may know build to be easily equipped with a smoke generator and already have a contact for this retrofit generator. Usually switched on (in digital) by f1 or in the new system, by one of the function-keys.

If you buy Seuthe smoke generators you will get a syringe to fill the smoke generator.
I think it's a 2 ml syringe; you need max. 0.2 ml for one load, so you can store 10 loads in the syringe.

I started with M* smoke generators - they tell you to fill the smoke generator with 6 drops. That gave me a hard time - especially with my 250 ml Seuthe bottle...
Then I bought a Seuthe smoke generator: they included a syringe and the information to fill 0.2 ml per load.

Will have to look-up the Seuthe part number if someone is interested.
Regards
Tom
