There is a Marklin Shop on the Parnassusweg (http://www.marklinstore-amsterdam.nl/). Walking distance from station Zuid/WTC. Easy connection from Schiphol.

They are a spin off of a shop in Badhoevedorp, nearby Amsterdam, and if you would measure it some 500 meters (yes meters) outside of Amsterdam, but quite impossible to reach without a car, named Harlaar (http://www.modeltreinen.nl/index1.htm). Harlaar has very reasonable prices and is my local favorite.

(There are more shops in Amsterdam and surroundings, but I have bad experiences at most of them.)

Amsterdam Central Station has been built on an artificial island and is a remarkable building with a large glass and steel roof structure. It is a stunning station and is given back to the public in pieces (ongoing metro station construction below the rail tracks). Try to find track 13. Again, direct connection from Schiphol.

From the Haarlemmermeerstation there is a museum line (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrische_Museumtramlijn_Amsterdam) running old tram cars (I believe Sundays only). Tram/bus connection from Zuid/WTC or Central Station.

If you have the time, take the train to Haarlem station (not to be confused with the Haarlemmermeer station) outside Amsterdam. Just to visit the station, although Haarlem is quite nice too. You can get there by train from Schiphol in about 30 minutes.

Do agree the Haarlem station is very well worth a visit, its history goes back to 1839,when the first railway line between Amsterdam and Haarlem was opened.
A lot of old (restored) ornaments can still be seen.
For example:the walltiles for the waiting rooms, very nice!
Also,Haarlem station is a good place to meet a variety of Dutch trains,Intercity, local trains, freight trains, etc.
Walk outside and enjoy the beautiful innercity of Haarlem.
Did you know that Harlem in New York was named after Haarlem?
Have fun!
Have more than you show, speak less than you know (Shakespeare).

Many thanks for the tip. That is a very well stocked and helpful shop, oh that the exchange rate was as 4 years ago.I do reccmend this store, allowed my self some coaches..Off to the Museum tram on Sunday..

What a good transport system..Hotels..be careful [a story there].

One thing I noticed was a DVD playing outlining the Marklin recovery stragy [ one less maufacturing site etc. The shop mananger was quite clear all things there are sorted....
