Hi all,

I'm interested in purchasing a Märklin 'Glaskasten' loco in green bavarian livery. There have been 2 versions on the market I think: nr 3686 and later 36861.

Can anybody tell me what the (technical) difference is between these 2? Are they motorola I or II format?

On my layout I use a lot of contact track. Will current pickup be adequate for this 4 wheel loco?

What are the running characteristics? A lot of maintenance required?

Finally, what version do you guys recommend, at what price? I saw 3686 at 100 Eur at a local trade fair. 36861 is available for 160 Eur.

Thanks for your replies,
Bert

Hello Bert, if you want to know what protocol the decoder obeys, you can do a test: press 'stop' and, while the system is in stop state, change the direction of the loco. Then press 'go' and give a speed to the loco. If it changes direction, it obeys Mot II. If not, it has an early chip version and only obeys Mot I.
Hope this can help you.

Hi Jorge,

Yep I know how to differentiate the 2 protocols, but I want to know what protocol the glaskasten loco obeys before I buy it. You cannot ask for a testrun on a trade fair.

So it seems nobody here either owns a Glaskasten or runs it in digital? An answer to (some of) my questions would be helpfull though, to decide whether or not to buy the model.

The 3686 decoder is based on the 701.13 chip, thus it is Motorola 1. (but tolerates Motorola 2 format).

The 36861 I do not know the details about.

Hello Bert,

I have both Glaskastens you mentioned.
First, perz is right about the format. About the current pickup, I've never experienced problems with it, but I'm using K-track (most flex) Running characteristics are quite good for such a small loco, but don't expect to run long trains (> 2 cars) smoothly. This isn't realistic anyway...

Hi Bert, if the Lok is a Märklin one, numbered 36xx, it has a Motorola decoder installed (unless it's a used unit and the previous owner has changed the decoder, as I should do...). Motorola is the only protocol used by Märklin before they launched Märklin Systems.

Bert, i bought a 36861 a little time ago, running in analog for now, but she have no troubles with contact tracks, runs very well and i must say that it is one of my lasts boughts that report me major happiness, she is really a nice little loco.
I've got it from a seller on ebay, new and under warranty for US$ 185.

Thank you for your replies,

I will look out for a 36861 and when I find an interesting (=cheap enough) one I'll buy it :).

It will look nice on my layout. BTW the 'fluo' green of the layout is gone now, I really should update my webpage and let you guys see the progress that has been made.

I have two glaskasten. The old green one and the one from ten years MHI nr 28972. There are not bad. But you have to keep yours track clean and hendel them carefully because there are fragile.
M-track with a CS2.
