Hello,

Yup, another beginner question.. When upgrading a motor, do the 2 supplied resistors HAVE to be attached directly to the motor shield or can they go elsewhere as long as they’re between the motor and decoder? For example, can I put them in the tender with the decoder where there is a lot more room?

Thanks Jeff

Hi Jeff

Those are not resistors, but coils / chokes to prevent RF interference.
They do not need to be on the motor itself, but the closer to it, the better...

Hello Jeff,

Speaking from personal experience -- whenever I upgrade an old loco to digital, I remove the chokes completely (i.e., throw away). None of my locos have the two chokes and there's no interference whatsoever. In the old days, the AC motors were prone to create RF interference, but the new DC motors and digital decoders are very unlikely to create havoc with any other electornic components on (or near) your layout.

Just my 2 cents. Take it at face value.
Cheers,
Andry
