Hello Sally I have this wonderful set and the cars are very detailled and do not need any superdetailling The bag of extra parts (with each car) contains: - the folding inter-car corridors in retracted position (for extremity cars) - the brake lines (non-compatible with normal operation and couplers but rather for showcase) Note: the arrangement of cars in the consist is imposed by Märklin: - the baggage car at the end with the slider and folded bellows at the end - the other (non-fitted with red marker lights) at the other extremity - all other cars (Voitures salon) inbetween If you need to change the arrangement of cars you may need to: - swap the unfolded bellows for folded ones or vice-versa - change the current pickup location but ONLY ONE pickup per consist AND you need to open the car to change the pickup location which is not recommended because these cars are fragile and complex Here is an opened Voiture Salon (bottom part only  A wonderfull set BUT ATTENTION any coupling with a loco fitted with older couplings may cause derailment so better change the loco coupling for the last (super-flat) ones #72000 Cheers Jean |

Refer to the instructions manual and it may show. These are usually grab irons, roof vents, destination boards and or bogie and undercarriage details. Brake parts, axle speedometer, or climate control parts. Some may fall off and get lost during running around the layout.

My set is still in my jumble of Marklin items from my move last year, but if I locate those coaches I will let you all know. It won't be something that is important as far as running the coaches, but more likely something primarily for display purposes. I have never seen any Marklin model without the grab irons already installed at the factory. |

I do not see grab irons in the cars when I look through the windows. I think they would look nice if they were factory installed down the middle of the ceiling. I imagine that I could glue them to the undersurface of the ceiling under the light plate... Not sure it is worth the risk in my hands. Thanks again!

The grab irons people referenced are on the outside, placed besides the doors. |

Hi Sally,
I had to check what was in those bags and Jean already answered this, which I somehow missed.
The rectangular pieces are the retracted diaphragms that would replace the extended ones that came installed on the coaches. You would only install them if you were running one of these coaches at the front or rear of the train. In normal operation the baggage cars would be in those positions, and they would not be needed. So they are probably not something that you would ever use.
Jean's other answer is also correct, and the tiny bits are brake lines that you would only install if these were being displayed, not operated. So basically they are part of the set and should be kept, but not something very likely to ever be used.
Doing this reminded me to get some track powered to run these on, since I have never even seen them lighted yet! Sad but true. |

The small parts are brake hoses/cables etc, intended for vitrine displays. they are to go where the yellow markings are. (both ends on all cars) otherwise, there are also some loose steps for the baggage cars, also intended for vitrine displays. mounting positions marked in red.  turn your wagons upside down and you will see mounting holes "under" the couplers for the brake hoses/cables etc. Unfortunately, the instruction manual does not include any information about where to mount the extras.

Regarding the "dimm" table lights. there are some interesting posts over at stummiforum https://www.stummiforum.de/t220678f2-Pullmanwagen-Set-Edelweiss-5.html one guy there has improved the table lights and installed a decoder in each wagon. Quite interesting but it seems that he has wired the table lights directly to the decoder and in the process bypassed the buffer capacitors on the main/roof PCB. ? overall I wish there was a way to only dim the roof lights and leave the table lights as they are.....? But overall the wagons are great, and the slightly dim table lights are only a minor detail. Tried the 42470 after a locomotive with a dimmable current-conducting coupler and it was only possible to dim them very slightly, and of course, the table lamps were also dimmed. (same type of relay as used in 39781)

I have considered dimming the overhead lighting with some type of cover, which would be much simpler than doing it by altering the electronics. Perhaps some yellow plastic under the LEDs to make the light warmer and lower intensity compared to the table lamps.
I haven't even opened one of these beautiful coaches yet, but I may give that a try whenever I get some time to experiment. |
