I also have this 26 year old train that runs perfect, and I want to convert it to digital, but don’t know how and I dont know what model it is, it was from a started set. I saw alot of online videos, but what kind of decoder would I need, and I heard you can have a decoder that allows you to upload your own sound effects is that true?

According to http://www.bahn.hfkern.de/Maerklin/Dt_Loks_V212.html, it should be either a 3072(2) or 3072(5).

Will let some of our digital conversion experts chime in on custom sound capabilities. I believe it's possible with ESU Loksound decoders, not so sure about Märklin mSD3.

EDIT: found a thread discussing the conversion:

Good morning

Yes, you can insert a sound decoder into that diesel locomotive.
And yes, you can customise your own sounds for some sound decoders.
But you will require some hardware and some software :

1) You will need to replace the motor inside the locomotive with a more modern high efficiency motor.
You may need either the 60941 or the 60944 motor kit ... you would need to determine this from size of the current motor in the locomotive.
Perhaps removing the top cover and taking a picture of the existing motor would enable us to let you know which motor you require.

2) You will need a sound decoder. I use the Marklin Sound Decoder 60986 for diesel locomotives like this. Other decoders may also be suitable.

3) If you use the Marklin sound decoder, then you can customise the sounds by having various Marklin hardware and software options.
I have downloaded the Marklin Sound Library (mDecoder Tool) onto my laptop, and this software allows you to select a range of sounds from the Marklin Sound Library, and to compile a sound project for your loco. I use the Marklin CS2 connected to my laptop computer to upload sounds for my locos.

4) There are even other options for Marklin using a sound decoder with a wiring harness and a decoder programmer connected to your laptop,
and there are options for other brands too.

Regards
John

Hello

Thank you for the good pictures.
That old motor is a Large Flat Commutator Motor (LFCM).

The modern high efficiency motor which you require is therefore the Marklin 60944 kit. As mentioned in one of the attached threads, the new motor magnet will perhaps require a slight filing down in one corner to get it to fit neatly into the chassis.

As I mentioned previously, the Marklin 60986 Sound Decoder would be suitable, but some other brands would have suitable sound decoders too.
Which Digital Controller will you be using ?
Reason for my question relates to the choice of Sound Decoder.
If you have a Marklin Digital Controller, then the Marklin Sound Decoder would be my choice.

I should mention as well that it would be highly recommended to swap the old lights for new lights, in particular because the old lights will flicker due to the old method of connection to ground AC in the light socket. Hence, two light sockets Marklin E276770 and two lights E600080 would be suitable replacements.

Regards
John

I will be using a Marklin 6021 for digital control.
Would that still work? What sound decoder should I use; I would like to upload my own custom sounds. What hardware software would I need? Thanks,

The 3072 can be converted with the 60944 motor.

But the new motor is thicker than the old one. So you need to do alterations on the loco body and the field magnet to fit the motor in.

Is not an easy conversion!!!!

Some pictures from my conversion:

The Original

IMG_45766_resize.JPG

The two magnets
IMG_45793_resize.JPG

Some metal must be filled for the thicker magnet and the screw to be fitted

IMG_45783_resize.JPG
IMG_45796_resize.JPG
IMG_45798_resize.JPG

The new motor in place!!!
IMG_45801_resize.JPG
IMG_45805_resize.JPG
IMG_45806_resize.JPG
IMG_45802_resize.JPG

Next problem:
The magnet is to thick and on curves has a contact with the rear bogie
IMG_45794_resize.JPG

So you need to file some metal from the magnet where is marked
IMG_45792_resize.JPG
IMG_45809_resize.JPG
IMG_45812_resize.JPG

Better now
IMG_45813_resize.JPG

Final motor assembly: be careful the two screws are not the same!!!
IMG_45816_resize.JPG
IMG_45819_resize.JPG
IMG_45821_resize.JPG
IMG_45820_resize.JPG

Everything in place working fine
IMG_46334_resize.JPG

The loco ready

The WW and Red LED lights is another story......

I hope that this will help you because there is no other way if you want a 5pole motor

If you have any problems during the conversion don't hesitate to ask.

Have fun

To have sounds you need a controller to support them.
With the 6021 is not possible.

The solutions are two:

1. The Mobile Station 2 or 3 (the same in different color). Good solution and cheap
2. CS3 the sate of the art solution but is five times more expensive than the MS3

Why not?
The 6021 can control up to 17 functions with current ESU decoders and 15 or 16 functions with current Märklin decoders.
There is no MS3. The MS2 cannot upload sound projects to the decoder, so sticking to the 6021 for a while is a valid option IMHO.

This is correct, and 6021 can control 16 functions normally, using 4 addresses. (can be programmed using 6021)
one option is to use the Marklin USB decoder programmer and keep the 6021. (60971) (factory fitted decoders are locked)

If you can live without sound, a Marklin 60906 might be worth considering. With a 60906 you can use the old motor as it is.

Wow Very impressive work, thanks for the detailed instructions Costas, I am definitely following your method of conversion. 2 things come to mind:
1. I noticed the digital decoder in the loco in the pic does not have a switch board of numbers to assign the address.
2. And would the model 60944 be compatible running using a 6021?
Thanks again

The decoder is an mFx sound decoder (dip switches are 20 years old story)

To use your own sound is possible with Märklin mSD3 decoders as well with the ESU LokSound 5 decoders.

To do that you need special hardware and software and a lot of knowledge. Is better to leave this to somebody with experience in sound decoders at the moment.

In addition to 60944, you will need a 60976 decoder. and yes a 60976 can be controlled with a 6021. but max 16 functions. (F0+F1-14+F16), f15 is not usable but f16 is.

Yes, you can also try downloading the software, and test it. https://www.maerklin.de/de/service/downloads/neu-nachruest-decoder-mld3msd3/mdecodertool-mdt3/

60976 decoder will work best, latest generation and with 21 pin interface, (be careful it's easy to bend the pins)
60976 have preloaded diesel generic sounds, but you can change them.

If you buy a new locomotie from marklin, you can not change the sounds etc with 60971.

Esu is another maker of quality decoders, if buy an Esu decoder you will also probably need their LokProgrammer. (and you would still need 60944)

A 60971 will upload sounds ONLY to a Marklin decoder.

If you use an ESU Loksound decoder then you need an ESU Lokprogrammer to upload sounds to it.

It doesn't matter which manufacturers decoder you use you can only use that manufacturers programmer to upload sounds, There is no standard method or format for sound files and how they are uploaded.

So the problem becomes one of deciding which manufacturer you wish to purchase decoders from, as you will need to purchase their programmer if you wish to upload sounds.

The ESU Loksound decoder has a very active email group on groups.io, with a number of experienced people who have generated custom sound files.

I am not aware of a similar group for marklin decoders, but there are a number of people on this group who have played with setting these up.

After installing the new motor, how do you assign the loco an address on your digital layout?

Once you have upgraded the motor, you will have to install a circuit board and decoder. Once that is done, the decoder will have a factory set default address. For ESU, Zimo, etc, the default is usually '03' for DCC or MM. To change that using a 6021, you have to put the locomotive on the track (by itself) and perform a reset to put the 6021 into programming mode.
See 6021 manual for exact instructions.
Once that is done, you can then select '01' (the address CV), hit reverse, enter the new address (e.g. 12 for 212) and then reverse again. The decoder will now respond to address '12'.
As there is no Märklin dealer in Montreal, you may want to check with Westend Trains (Mike) or John's Photo (Randy) in Toronto or I can give you a few dealers south of the border that can either do the work for you or help you with the accessories you require.

Greetings Masters!
I would like to ask you a question.
I want to turn a Br86 Telex clutch locomotive into an mfx loud smoky digital locomotive.
The question would be what kind of converter kit should be added / motor, decoder, etc. / that handles the telex clutch?
Thanks in advance for the answer.
Greetings: Attila

Hello Costas,
So I started the digital conversion process and here is what I am ordering for parts:

- Marklin 60944 motor
- Marklin 60976 sound decoder
- But for the front and rear lights (white and red) how can I set them up like you showed in the pics, and what parts do I need ?
