I am relatively new to the digital world (an to the forum) and need some advice.

I have looked through many other posts but nothing jumps out that has assisted with my deliberations.

I am planning to convert a 3046 steam loco to Digital. The unit is quite old (probably late 1960's) but is in good condition.

My original plan was to use a 60975 decoder and a 60944 motor upgrade. the 60944 is the one listed in the CS3 book so I am happy with that.

I was about to order the kits and thought I had better have a look inside the loco. On inspection there does not seem to be much room and am wondering if I should use the 60985 decoder. If necessary the speaker can be mounted in the tender.

Has anyone done a 3046 previously and can officer some guidance.

Also some guidance on the smoke unit would be appreciated. The front light and the smoke unit are fed by the same wire. Can the two function be easily separated?

Thanks in anticipation.

Michael

Hello Michael

I have converted a 3047 loco using the 60944 motor and the 60975 sound decoder.

I placed the decoder and the speaker inside the tender.
I drilled a small hole in the front of the tender for the wires to go through from the loco to the tender.

My version of 3047 does not have a smoke unit - the smoke chimney is closed.
For the front light, I usually leave the light connected directed to the pickup slider.
It gives a brightness from the higher voltage than the decoder would supply.
But of course you are not able to switch it on and off.

I believe an easy solution to this would be to use a socket adapter like E276770 and E610080 light bulbs. you would then get flicker free light separated from the smoke unit.
the E276770 is just inserted in the old socket.
E276770 example:

though not the same combination of parts, I show how I separated the light and smoke in my 3048 conversion...

Most of the steps will be similar.
