As a footnote you can see in the second Cerfontaine photo how Belgian trains run on the left track. There are changeover tracks on the German and Dutch borders where the trains run on the right. |

Aumühle is an interesting prototype for further aspects - see track plan: Although sporting a rather simple trackage, the station sees both long distance and local traffic, has a small layover yard for suburban trains and a former depot which houses a railway museum complete with historic engines and rolling stock. Thus, a modeler could have an ICE at the same time as a steam locomotive. |

It looks like Aumühle is the end station for the S-Bahn, AK? This is a great scene to model. Peter

Yes, Aumühle is the terminus of the line S21 of the S-Bahn Hamburg to Elbgaustraße, which runs westwards along the railway line Berlin-Hamburg. It is also used as terminus for the regional railway RB11 running eastwards to Büchen. After WW2 long distance traffic on the Berlin-Hamburger Bahn was severely reduced due to the iron curtain between the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic, with only a few transit trans left between Hamburg and Berlin. Suburban traffic continued to be steam-operated after WW2. Suburban sprawl led to increased demand, so the steam trains were replaced by a new electric S-Bahn line between Berliner Tor and Bergedorf. Local and regional traffic running from Bergedorf eastwards to Aumühle und further on to Büchen was handled with steam / diesel trains.
In 1969 an extension of the S-Bahn from Bergedorf to Aumühle took place. Some modifications at the station were made. The southern platform was closed and the two southern tracks became pure transit tracks for trains to and from Berlin The northern platform, which previously served as a stop for suburban trains, became the terminus of the S-Bahn. While the S-Bahn trains from Elbgaustraße (formerly Pinneberg) were operated on track 1, track 2 was divided in the center by bumpers. The western section served for the S-Bahn, the eastern part for regional trains commuting between Büchen and Aumühle. Thus it was possible to change trains between the S-Bahn and the regional train without having to change the platform.
After German reunification the conditions changed. Hamburg-Berlin became an ICE line. Therefore the S-Bahn between Berliner Tor and Aumühle obtained dedicated tracks. During the construction S-Bahn traffic to Aumühle was interrupted from 1994 to 2002, and the station was served by diesel shuttle trains from Bergedorf. During the conversion, a dual-track S Bahn line was built between Bergedorf and Wohltorf next to the existing long-distance railway line, but between Wohltorf and Aumühle was only space for one track. In addition, level crossings were eliminated. In Aumühle the remains of the southern platform on the long-distance line were completely removed and the high-speed tracks were upgraded. As of 2002, Aumühle serves again as terminus for the S21 between Aumühle/Bergedorf and Elbgaustraße and the RB 11 to Büchen via Friedrichsruh, Schwarzenbek and Müssen.
Further trivia:
Otto von Bismarck´s manor house is positioned in the forest, directly beside the Hamburg-Berlin railway line, in Friedrichsruh. Some of his descendants still live there. Bismarck was entombed in a mausoleum just outside of Friedrichsruh in 1899.
Büchen, a railway junction in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, is served by trains on the Berlin–Hamburg and Lübeck–Lüneburg lines. During the division of Germany, Büchen was a border station on the line between Berlin and Hamburg in the Federal Republic of Germany. |

Who says that modern railroading is boring? 1997 action in Aumühle: Class 218 diesel with SE 15939 (Reinbek-Büchen) and ICE 814 "Flying Hamburger" (Berlin-Hamburg). 2014 action in Aumühle: Electric loco class 101 hauled IC 2071 Hamburg - Dresden is passing a bulk cargo train, pulled by two class 145 locos in double traction. At the platform, RB 21877 is awaiting the departure to Büchen. On the extreme right, the current rail feeding the S-Bahn is visible. www.bahnbilder.de |

Aumühle once again: Local /regional traffic handled by steam train. I have seen German nitpickers complaining that it is not prototypical for parallel signal posts to skid sideways. Well, looking at the signal positions here... And there are some fellows in this hobby who believe that each station track got to be used into either direction. Well, looking at track 2... www.bahnbilder.de |

No space for a station platform? Afraid that Preiserlings are swiped by an ICE speeding at 100 km/h through the station? Just name your venue "Frankfurt-Mainkur", like the prototype (2008 photograph). Edited by user 03 February 2017 19:59:30(UTC)

Got a Faller windmill, but fear it would look too Dutch on a German layout? Believing that it would not look right to have a flat layout with a track oval circling around that windmill. Especially when running a former DR loco? A large loco with a couple of coaches only? It happened on the line KBS 156 Wismar - Karow. Train no. 7619 at Dabel mill, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, 1995. Train no. 7619 near Neukloster, 1996. www.blockstelle.deEdited by user 05 February 2017 18:54:40(UTC)

San Diego & Arizona Eastern Railway. The track plan is more than half a century old, but the trestle (as well as the abandoned roadbed) and Jacumba Springs are still there. Several years ago, Union Pacific locos could be seen on the trestle. Modern equipment on a wooden trestle in the desert - what a sight. While San Diego commuter rail service uses the San Diego - Tijuana stretch in the west, the desert route in the east seems to have a future, too: http://www.sandiegounion...ing-2016jun09-story.html |

I have always liked DB mix of passenger coaches, like the Silberlinge/Rebuild combinations. My 1st train ride in Germany was in June of 1972 from München Hbf to Garmisch-Partenkirchen with Eilzug BR141 and Silberlinge/Umbauwagen mix. I sat in the rebuild coach. Cheers, Peter.

Actually, there are quite a lot of trains in front of windmills in Germany: Weddingstedt, 1997 & 2009 - the windmill is sitting on the outer corner of the flat layout behind the double-track oval (bonus semaphore signal). Erdeborn, 2009. Büttgen, 2016. Gettorf, 2008 (and still with semaphore signal). www.Lok-Magazin.de |

Fruitland Avenue, Los Angeles, Ca., USA The caption reads: "Here's something a bit different. A modern switcher pike, with full scenic treatment courtesy of Bing Maps. This is the mellifluously named 'Fruitland Avenue' in LA. Needless to say, not much fruit in evidence. Traffic is box cars to the warehouses, lumber racks are unloaded with the fork lift visible, and coil cars are unloaded using the gantry crane into waiting trucks or onto the ground for later transhipment. This is a small urban building supplies hub. And look, even the local swithc job is parked up - a nice pair of ATSF four axle switchers, a GP38-2 and a GP30M." http://www.rmweb.co.uk/c...erican-layouts/?p=650718 |
