Good evening,

Recently I rode the tourist train on a restored 12 km stretch of the old mining railway in the upper Rio Tinto valley near Minas de Ríotinto in the province of Huelva, southwestern Spain. The name of the British-Australian multinational metals and mining corporation Rio Tinto Group stems from this mine although it no longer controls the now defunct Rio Tinto mines. Note that the Rio Tinto (= Red River) has flowed red since ancient times due to acid drainage, and that mining started 5,000 years ago. See pix.

Very nice, Ak! Thanks for sharing.

Now all we need is for those steam locos to be restored to use as well!

I see from the website that they do run a steam loco, so I might try to visit this winter. It's only about 4 hours from me by car.

Hi Ak ,

Would you believe that when I was at the Rio Tinto in Spain (2010) I did not take any images !! As you point out the name has certain Australian context.

But more of Iberian railways :

Not forgetting that Gibraltar is also part of the Iberian Peninsular, I would like to inform forum members that there was once a railway in Gibraltar.

The railway was metre gauge and originated in the construction of the naval dockyard around 1900, but remained in use until the 1970s both within the dockyard and around other areas, transporting mainly goods and supplies to and from ships around the harbour. At it's peak the railway extended almost all around the rock, with a long tunnel joining the East and West sides, allowing a circular route to be followed several kilometres in length.

Recently a dilapidated old railway wagon was found abandoned in one of the many long disused tunnels, and the local Heritage Society had it restored. It is now on display as a reminder of the old railway system.

What was your experience in this shop?

I have been there twice. The first time was OK, though I found his prices a bit high. I walked out of the shop with a nice 34561 green E60 (since converted to full digital)

The second visit, however, was far from pleasant. After I asked for the price on a 3722 E94 he had on display he quoted a ridiculous figure, and then went on to tell me he would not sell me anything anyway and to get out of his shop! I was so shocked I just left the shop, trying to figure out if I'd said something he might have found offensive, but I'm sure I was perfectly polite. When I commented on this on the forum others said they had heard of similar experiences when the proprietor "didn't like the look of you"!

How were you served?

Well, forum member 5HorizonsRR knew the owner and conversed with him, while I was browsing without being addressed. Since 5HorizonsRR was knowledgeable, I did not talk to the owner. And remembering your experience, I did not feel compelled to do so. However, it was nice to inspect the treasure chest, and I am glad that 5HorizonsRR took me to the shop.

Neither did I expect, nor did I believe to see a Big Boy in Pennsylvania. At first I lectured my family that this would be a Challenger, which is second to the Big Boy. Only upon further investigation I realized... So yes, I agree.

"Aldeia Típica José Franco": On the outskirts of the town of Mafra near Lisbon in Portugal, sculptor José Franco has created an enchanting miniature, vaguely surreal craft village of windmills, watermills and traditional shops. In the basement of one of the buildings, an operating G scale layout with some animated features is to be found.

The unusual museum at Caramulo in central Portugal, one building displaying a small collection of masterpieces of art and another building dedicated to automobiles, has one room filled with tinplate toys, among them some trains. According to the somewhat superficial labelling, it is 1950s/1960s material by Hornby (UK), H.W.N. (Germany) and Marx (USA).

After this deviation: Back to the prototype. When driving on the highway, I followed the upper stretch of Linha da Beira Baixa in Portugal - currently closed as it is undergoing renovation works - which is clad to a mountain side and is bridging the odd ravine from time to time. As I was steering my car, I could not take pictures. Therefore I attach images which are courtesy of Wikipedia.

Recently witnessed by your correspondent on the former DRG&W (now UP) mainline in Utah:
At Helper a downhill eastbound BNSF manifest (seven locos pulling and one braking at the rear) met an uphill westbound UP coal drag (two locos pulling, one helping in the middle and two pushing from behind). The situation at the east end of the long Helper siding:

The BNSF train continued its trip, while the UP train awaited further motive power to make it up to Soldier Summit. After some time four extra UP locos - running "light" - descended from Soldier Summit and were cut into the middle of the coal train. Subsequently, a total of nine locos made the coal train move uphill - here seen at Castle Gate:

On that day three trains arrived at Silverton. While the above video shows the third train passing the old depot, this video is about the arrival of the first train at the terminus.

Still not happy with the first two attempts I returned to the cute depot, positioned myself somewhere else, optimised the timing and managed finally to ptoprtly operstr the recording device:

P.S.: Meanwhile I upgraded all prior videos made during this trip to HD quality.

Travelling along the coast of Maine, I stumbled over a turntable cum wedged engine house in the ferry port of Rockland:

Then, I was flabbergasted to learn that there existed a (seasonal) FL9-hauled streamliner passenger service until 2015, connecting with Amtrak in Brunswick.

Fascinating 2015 video (I love the sound of the horn) of the Mid-Coast Limited operated by the former Maine Eastern RR, which I found on YouTube:

Although derelict, the old tower is still a beauty.
